Holroyd's 1861 census
« on: Thursday 10 November 11 20:57 GMT (UK) »
Are there some" missing" pages from the Norfolk/Suffolk census of 1861? I have lost a family and believe that they were more than likely residing in either of those areas.

The details are:
John Holroyd c1825 Yorkshire  Engine Driver
Jane             c1821 Lancashire Wife
Their Children
Sarah           c1847 Sheffield
Randolph      c1849 Staffordshire
Herbert        c1851 Sheffield
Eleanor        c1854 Norfolk
John            c1856 Suffolk
Anne           c1858 Suffollk

If anyone can help locate them in the 1861 census I would be most grateful.
I have them for 1851(Cheshire) and 1871(Norfolk); I have tried name variants and tried searching for them individually. But no luck!

For tracing purposes - 1871 shows specific birthplaces as follows:

Jane = Liverpool
Eleanor = Norwich
John = Lowestoft
Anne = Lowestoft

1851 has Randolph b Lower Wick - extract from IGI Pilot site

Name: Randolph Holroyd  Age: 2  Birthplace: Lower Wick, Staffordshire

I'm not sure - but is Lower Wick in Worcs?

Checked on a map........yes there is a Lower Wick in Worcs. there is also one in Gloucs! But doesn't appear that Staffs. has one. Later censuses show Randolph's birthplace as Spoon Lane and Spoor Lane; however not an issue as it's the 1861 census that the family are missing from.

Thanks anyway CaroleW.

It could be an issue as I was using Randolph as my search criteria for 1861.

However - if I am using a birthplace of Staffs and the 1861 shows Worcs - I won't get a match

From information gleaned at 2012 Who do you think you are, it appears there was a fire in the 1950's at Norwich records office(?) and many papers/records destroyed.

I will therefore complete this post.

Thanks for help given.
