Query re: Blank cause of death column
« on: Thursday 10 November 11 02:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I wonder if anyone can shed some light on a query for me.  I have a registration of a death for Mary Thomson ms Meikle age 27 at Birniebog, Lesmahagow, where no cause of death, duration of illness or name of medical attendant is noted.  I originally thought that she had died in childbirth but her son was born 8 months prior to her death.  She died in November 1867 and I wondered if there was any way of finding out if there had been a report of her death in the local press.  She came from a well established farming family of the area - her father being William Meikle and her mother Margaret Meikle ms Stewart and she was married to Alexander Thomson Jr, blacksmith, Damhill Smithy, Corehouse, Lesmahagow.

I would be very grateful for any information as I live in Australia and only have access to online resources.

Hello,

I take it that you've downloaded the death entry from Scotlands People?  Can you also confirm that in the extreme left of the entry there is no writing which suggests that an entry into the  Register of Corrected Entries (RCE) has taken place.

If no RCE I personally lack the experience to give further advice.  Good luck.

Regards,  Steve

Re no medical attendant ...... this sadly was quite a normal state of affairs in many areas due to lack of access to a doctor. Normally some estimation of the cause of death was given by relatives e.g. "old age", "visitation by God" but strangely since 1855 although it was compulsory to report a death it was not compulsory to provide a cause of death.

Hi All

Thanks for the suggestions for the blank cause of death column.  Have been informed by another family connection that it was a suicide caused by post natal depression.  Very sad.
