Fishers Row
« on: Wednesday 09 November 11 23:20 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if the house numbers in Fishers Row changed over the years as they did in other parts of the town.  My dad lived in I think the second house on right as you came up from William Street.  In 1911 census it was number 40 but I think the address I knew it as on trips there in 40s and 50s was 10 or 12.  Rattler Fortune lived next door.  Anne

Below is a photo of the right hand side of Fishers Row (Byrnes Lane) looking up the road from William St as it looks today with the newer homes built in place of the old properties.

Based on my Mother’s memory from the 1940’s the houses in order from the bottom of the street going up were occupied as follows:

House 1: Rattler Fortune
House 2: Harpurs (Sally)
House 3: Harpurs (Nancy)
A gap
House 5: Dalton’s (my Mother lived here 1940-1948)
House 6: Ffrench’s

My Mum things her house number was 9 but isn’t sure. This would imply that the house numbers went 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 etc. Unfortunately there’s no house number on her birth cert to confirm her house number.

Opposite these house lived

Furlongs
O’Grady’s
Carrolls (moved to Harbour View)
Rossiters (moved to Gulbar Rd)
Annie Swan (very old lady, wife of Frank Swan)
Bill Bolger (an old seafaring chap – possibly a brother of Annie Swan)

Thanks for that.  In my family research I have number 10 coming up.   I remember Nancy and her husband Jim who if memory serves me right, played accordian.  My godfather Tom Grannell lived about half way up on other side.  Anne

I was born in No. 30 Fishers Row in 1950.  I remember most of the people who lived there before a lot of the families moved to Bernadette Place in 1958.  Jim and Nancy Fortune, Pat and Sally Byrne, O'Grady's French's, Stephen and Bridie Martin.  Then a fence/wall/ditch.  O’Briens, then our house No. 30.  I remember an old man name of Peter Kehoe next to us. So we were number 30 and we were about half way up on the right hand side as you looked up from William Street.

Thanks again.  I have found that Grandad's house was number 10.  Sally and Pat lived there after he died.  Jim and Nancy on one side and on the other was Jim's father, Rattler Fortune.  My namesake.  Anne

Thank you for the latest on Grandad Harpur.  Sadly I have few memories of him.  Mum took the family back to Liverpool end of september 1940.  I was 8 months old.  The next visit was after the war in 45.  I remember him taking us on his Pilot boat for the regatta.  I got colic and we all had to go back to Mary Street.  Only time in my life I have suffered from sea sickness.  Anne

I bought the book on Wexford Mariners on my visit earlier this week.  I found my grandfather death report.  When I looked at the book yesterday I found amazing coincidences.  On page 303 there is a piece about Billy Walsh who drowned in the River Plate while aboard Mail ship Asturius in 1938.  My dad served on same ship in WW2 and was torpedoed in July 1943.  They were adrift and sinking when they were rescued by a Dutch tugboat calle The Zwarte Zee.  On page 305 I find a report of a rescue of a crew member of the Light ship Coningbeg.  First ship on the scene was The Zwarte Zee.  Couple of pages on, 313 is a piece about Patrick O'Leary who served on HMS Exeter and died in the battle of the River Plate.  To round it all off, when Dad went into the navy as a reserve in September 1939 he was on the Exeter but just before she sailed he was transfered to the Asurius.  Anne
