Tasmania Help Please
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 19:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi there.

I have a Mary Montgomery (Domestic servant) born 1866 Donegal, who immigrated to Tasmania and arrived in Hobart 3 Feb 1884 on the Gulf of Carpentaria. The records state she is going to work for a Mr Waller. Many,  Wallers in Tasmania. Because I have had trouble finding any infomration on Mary I decided to look at the passenger list again and see if anyone else was immigrating to work for Mr Waller and maybe trace them for at least an area of residence. I found a Michael McSharry (labourer) and Susan Peoples (Domestic servant) but am also unable to trace their whereabouts. I imagine Mr Waller was either a farmer or had something to do with mining. I did think maybe he advertised in Ireland, but a fellow rootschatter looked in the Freemans journal and found nothing.

Mary died in 1940 in Tasmania and the only death I can find for that year is a Mary Montgomey married to a Robert Montgomery. I have no idea if she married, or had children. Although I have found a few marriages, none so have proven to be her. There are a few Marys on the Electoral roles but I was hoping to find something close to the time period she arrived. I'm just not having any luck.

What is my best course of action. Is the historical Society a good place to start

I am unsure what information you know to be fact, what you have come across in your research, and what outcome you are wanting.

You have Mary, died Tasmania, 1940..and you do not know if she was married or unmarried.

Is this woman the subject of your research, and you have been looking for her background?

Or is Mary Montgomery, arr. Tasmania 1884, the person of interest to you, and she might be the woman who died in 1940?

Can you name the woman who died in 1940 with any details you know about her, and the death...date, place.

Hi LIL

Perhaps a co-incidence, but . . . .
There was a marriage in TAS  for a Mary MONTGOMERY to Henry James TUTTLE at Glenorchy (supposedly) in1890.
Also,
A Mr G A WALLER,  a J.P. for the Glenorchy Police Courts in the 1880s.

Essie

ADDED

GA WALLER = George Arthur WALLER (1835-1923) was a civil engineer and has a connection to the Peerage in Ireland.

Mary and Henry are worth me looking into, thanks. what is the peerage? I've not heard that term before.. GA Waller is a good start :)

Majm, nice to see you again :)  Thanks for the news article. I hope I can tie them all in.

Wivenhoe the 1884 immigration and 1940 Tasmania death year dates are for the same Mary. The death date is from my mothers tree online and it's private. She is also deceased.

Regards

George Arthur Waller (1835-1923) seems to have been from Tipperary- born & died there:

Lil, the peerage are Lords and Barons.

The George Arthur WALLER and wife Sarah Harriett ATKINSON are listed in the Colonial Tasmanian Family Links with two sons born 1882 and 1884.

Family trees have them with a number of children after their marriage in 1865. I have not seen their deaths nor leaving TAS mentioned in TROVE, and do not doubt that they may have returned to Ireland.

See that one of the sons listed has Guinness as middle name which makes sense as G.A. Waller was chemist with Guinness Brewery.
