Edmund Nelson (Bn 1610) Norfolk
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 06:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
I'm looking for information on Edmund Nelson (Lord Nelson's ancestor) who lived in Scarning, Norfolk. He married twice - Joan and then Alice.
I'm particularly interested in his siblings, and his father Thomas.
Appreciate any help
Craig Hawke

Hi Craig,

Welcome to rootschat.

Do you know whereabouts in Norfolk that Edmund was born?

Do you know where his father Thomas was born?

Have you looked through any of the Norfolk PR's on Familysearch? Dates of coverage will vary from parish to parish.

I see on the IGI that there are numerous submitted records for the 1610 birth of Edmund in Wending, Norfolk. They say he married Joan.

I see that the parish records on Familysearch start at 1539 for WendLing. You may like to check:

Hello, Craig and whoever else is interested.

I think you will find that Edmund Nelson, born around 1610, (but it is not yet clear in which Parish), was married three times.  When he married Joanna Griffin on 12th April 1635 he was already a widower.  By his first marriage he had a son, Edmund, baptised 29.11.1629.

With Joanna he had two daughters, Joanna bap. 29.6.1636 and Anne, bap. 25.5.1637 in Wendling.  Anne was buried 28.8.1637.

Edmund married thirdly Alice but there were no marriage records kept in Wendling during the Commonwealth 1648 - 1660. With Alice he had Bridget, bap. 24.2.1652, William bap. 24.3.1654 (my ancestor) and John bap 2.2.1656 all in Wendling.

I have all this information because I have spent hours going through the records in the Archive Centre in Norwich.

Whatever the History books might say, Edmund was not the son of Thomas of Lynn nor did he have any connection with London or Lancashire.  This was all fabricated and I am in the process of finding out his true ancestry.  I have proof of all of this.  I want you to know this as I am tired of all the misinformation and speculation that is going around and would like to set the record straight. Officially, too, of course.

If you would like to reply, Craig, I would be happy to share with you.  Are we related?

Yours, Chula

To whoever is interested:-

I have searched further through the Parish Register for Wendling and have come across a burial for an Alice Nelson on 27 July 1632.  Could this lady have been Edmund's first wife and mother of Edmund,  baptised 29 Nov. 1629?  The time line fits as Edmund was a widower when he married Johann (Joanna) Griffin.

I have also found the burial of a Johann Nelson on 30 June 1636.  In the Hundreds of Launditch this burial is reported as being that of a 'John Nelson' but the Parish Register clearly shows the name to be 'Johann'.  If this is so, then sadly, neither of Edmund's daughters with Johann (Joanna) lived for very long.

I have not yet found the burial of Johann (Joanna), Edmund's second wife.

Hope this information will help researchers.

Good researching to all.

Chula.
