Robert Meggeson, born March 10, 1751, Brancepeth, Durham
« on: Sunday 08 May 05 19:51 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if this Robert MEGGESON born to William MEGGESON and Jane was the same Robert MEGGISON who married Jane Davison June 26, 1773 in Sedgefield, Durham?  Note the different spelling.  The age fits.  Of course, I realize that there are a million Robert Meggisons/Megginsons/Meggsons etc.  Just a thought.

It's been a while since you posted this!!!

Hope this bit of information helps you.  Robert died in 1840 buried Houghton Le Spring on 23 Sep 1840 - aged 90  His will is viewable at this link

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6SSS-S8Y?mode=g&wc=9PQP-SYH%3A1078421505%3Fcc%3D2358715&cc=2358715

and lots of images of wills and bishops transcripts for Durham at this link:

http://familyrecords.dur.ac.uk/

Doesn't answer your question, but as he left all his estate to the children of his brother, Ralph and other nephews/nieces it certainly looks as if he had no children/grandchildren of his own - which might help if there were children from the marriage you mention...?

Good hunting
Regards

Robert/Jane were both of the Parish at time of Marriage 1773

They Baptised St Edmund, Sedgefield;
JANE 1774
ANN 1776
GEORGE 1777
JAMES 1780
THOMAS 1782
ROBERT 1784
OSWALD 1787
MARGARET 1790, buried 1805 age 15
Most have abode as Hardwick Mill or some just Hardwick

BURIALS;
St Edmund, Sedgefield
ROBT Meggison, 10 Aug 1792, no age given, abode Hardwick Mill**
JANE Meggison,    21 Jul 1836, age 84, abode Bishop Middleham (birth c 1752)

I did notice a HANNAH Meggison married Ralph BELL, 28 Nov 1773, same Church.
Possible Sister for Robert?

AS Robert/Jane dont name a Son William I would urge caution that his Father was a William

All above on FreeREG

It is possible Robert was older than you think.
May have been married twice ?, although 26 June 1773 Marriage on FreeREG has no marital status for either Robert/Jane.

Burial;
St Edmund
HANNAH Meggison, Wife of ROBERT, 7 May 1773
Abode Hardwick Mill
Baptism, same Church;
DOROTHY, Daug of ROB/HANNAH Meggison, 5 Nov 1769, abode Hardwick Mill

There are also 2 other Burials;
THOMAS Meggison, 25 March 1780, Son of ROBERT
MARY Meggison, 27 March 1780, Daug of ROBERT
No ages given.
Both have abode as Hardwick Mill

Sorry more questions than answers.

Looks like there is a connection as Ralph/Hannah BELL, name a Daug Dorothy in 1789
Hannah, Wife of Ralph was buried 18 June 1790, no age given (darn!)

F/S has these Children to ROBERT/HANNAH Meggison in Sedgefield;
ALICE, 28 May 1759
MARY, 6 Sept 1761
THOMAS, 26 May 1763, must have died
THOMAS, 8 Dec 1764
WILLIAM, 22 May 1767
DOROTHY, 5 Nov 1769

Thomas 1764 and Mary 1761 must be the Burials in 1780 I presume.

I think you have made a wrong connection:

If you look at the will of Robert Meggison (died 1840 - you have your Robert's death 1792) at the web site link in my earlier post (it's free access and you are able to view images of the will) you will see that the beneficiaries are the sons and daughters of Ralph Meggison of Houghton Le Spring- giving their names and in the case of married girls - their husbands names; and the will of Ralph Meggison, butcher of Houghton Le Spring Will 1839 at the same site will confirm. Ralph Meggeson, butcher of Houghton Le Spring married Jane Bus(h)by on 31 Aug 1784  (Jane died between him writing the will in 1833 and adding a codicil in 1836)

Ralph & Jane's children:
Ann - bap 27 Dec 1787 -marr 26 May 1812 at Houghton to Thomas Wilson, butcher
Jane - bap 10 Apr 1792 - marr 30 Jan 1816 at Houghton to Thomas Bellerby, farmer
Dorothy - bap 27 Feb 1803 - marr 1 JUn 1824 at Houghton to George Watson
Ralph - bap 28 Apr  1786 - died 1850
Lively - bap 5 Apr 1790 - buried 19 Apr 1791
William - bap 4 Jan 1797
Mary - bap 6 Oct 1799 - marr 22 May 1821 at Houghtonto Isaac Moses
Hannah - bap 6 Apr 1795 - marr 27 Nov 1821 at Houghton to Anthony Anderson
there was also a Jane, bap 28 Apr 1786 but have been unable to find her death/burial (in view of their subsequent bapt of a Jane in 1792)

I don't think either is a match for your Sedgfield Ralph & Robert .

Ralph & Robert (of the wills) are sons of William Meggeson and Jane Harrison who married 12 May 1745 at Brancepeth (where their children were baptised).

=====================

It's not unheard of, but rare for a man quite recently widowed (Hannah burial 7 May 1773) to be remarried so soon - 26 June 1773;

However, a bit of brighter info for you.

Jane Meggison - who died 1836 of Bishop Middleham - buried Sedgefield -

I retract my concerns about swift marriage of Robert to Jane - I came across this marriage bond/licence application:

Marriage Bonds, Durham Diocese
Record Number: 425213.1
Religion: Anglican
25 Jun 1773 Robert Meggison (miller, widower), of Hardwick, Sedgefield obtained a licence to marry Jane Davison, age 25, of Sedgefield
Surety: John Robinson, parish clerk, of Sedgefield
[Note: married 26 Jun at Sedgefield]

Good hunting

All this is very interesting. I did the original posting and my Robert died Aug 7, 1792 in Sedgefield. I find it very strange that I haven't been able to find a will for him, although I did find one for his second wife Jane Davison who died 1836 in Bishop Middleham. I have never found parents for my Robert who was born abt 1730, not sure where. this is calculated from his age at death. My research over the years indicates that his parents may have been Thomas Meggison and Alice Bell. Robert's first daughter with first wife Hannah was Alice bapt May 28, 1759. His first son was Thomas bapt. May 26, 1763 and his second son was also Thomas bapt Dec 8, 1764. I have that first Thomas died Dec 1763 and second Thomas died Mar 25, 1780.  Robert didn't give up as he had a son Thomas in second marriage bapt Mar 20, 1782 and he is my ancestor who emigrated to Canada.
There is definitely a connection to Hannah Meggison born 1752 who married Ralph Bell as a Robert Meggison signed at her marriage, but I am not sure of the connection. Is she a daughter from first marriage?
Marriage of possible father Thomas was May 29, 1722 in Aycliffe. I have found several children for Thomas and Alice but not a Robert.  Thomas seemed to hang out at Coatham Mill and Grindon, Bishopwearmouth. Thomas had two sons Oswald and you can see that my Robert also had a son Oswald.
I now know all Robert's children from his second marriage as I have a letter written 1844 which outlines the family. I don't know about the children from his first marriage which were Alice, William and Dorothy (besides the Mary who died Mar 27, 1780). My Robert was at Hardwick Mill with second wife Jane, and possibly first wife Hannah. Would be nice to find the first marriage. I do have the second marriage.
Why can't I find Robert's birth or his will?
