There is a birth registration for a Lena Green who was born 27 Nov 1881 in Hastings County and was the daughter of William Green and Alice Smith. Lena's marriage registration gives her mother's name as Mary Jane but that's likely because she never knew her birth mother since Alice died when Lena was just a child.

Note: I removed the comment about Clayton being any only child. My initial search didn't turn up Lena.

Clayton Beryle Green was born 16 Oct 1878 in Sophiasburgh, Prince Edward County, Ontario to William Green and Alice Smith.

William, Alice and Clayton are in Thurlow, Hastings County on the 1881 census (starts line 13):
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e328/e008176003.pdf

Even though William and Mary Jane didn't marry until 1894 it appears they were together prior to that as there is a birth for a Beatrice Green who was born 16 Sep 1889 in Rawdon, Ontario with parents listed as William Green and Mary Jane Caverly (this is a delayed birth registration made in 1954).

The only other birth I can find for William and Mary Jane was for a son, William Ernest Green who was born 26 Oct 1896 in Rawdon, Hastings County.

I haven't been able to find them on the 1891 census but William and Mary Jane with children Beatrice and William are in Sidney, Hastings County on the 1901 census (starts line 6):

It looks like Clayton moved to the Cleveland, Ohio:

1st marriage:

A family tree at Ancestry indicates that he remarried in 1945. There is a death at the LDS site for his first wife in 1942:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.2/MSYD-785/p4

There is an index for Cuyahoga County, Ohio marriages which has a marriage between 1943-1945 for a Clayton Green.

Also, the Ohio deaths database at Ancestry has a death for Clayton in Cleveland on 6 Sep 1959.

Thanks Jacquie... I feel like I have a whole new family to explore now...

It would appear though that Hulda Griswold is still an ancestor.. so I'm still searching for her.  I'll be going through all the links you provided to me today on my lunch... maybe I'll run across something!

Thanks for all of this! :)

To start you on your way, here's the 1871 Canada census entry for Alice Smith with her parents, Henry and Phebe in Rawdon, Hastings County (family starts on line 17):
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0gnw/

It took some time but I found them on the 1861 Canada census with names that were definitely spelled phonetically by the enumarator (I'll spell them as they appear so you will have an easier time finding them if you are able to search the census yourself):

Henery Smith, farmer, born Upper Canada, Baptist, 56
Pheby Smith, born Upper Canada, Baptist, 49
Polly Smith, born Upper Canada, Baptist, 23
Robert Smith, labourer, born Upper Canada, Baptist, 20
Daniel Smith, school master, born Upper Canada, Baptist, 18
Emely Smith, born Upper Canada, Baptist, 14
Henery Smith, born Upper Canada, Baptist, 12
Silas Smith, born Upper Canada, Baptist, 10
Allis Smith, born Upper Canada, Baptist, 5

I haven't been able to find the family on the 1852 Canada census.

There is a Henry Smith who died in Rawdon, Hastings County on 10 Aug 1883. He was 79 when he died. It also indicates he was a farmer, Baptist and born in Canada. Henry is listed as a widow on the 1881 census. I couldn't find a death for Phebe so either she died before registration started in 1869 or her death wasn't registered.
