To be certain of tracing the correct couple, you need to obtain Elizabeth Ann FORD's birth certificate, as this will give her mother's maiden name.
I'm a bit confused - I've looked at the 1881 census and Elizabeth Ann's birthplace is given as Teignmouth which is nowhere near Crediton. In addition, there were 2 different John FORD's living in the Stoke Damerel area - both with a daughter named Elizabeth Ann - have you obtained her marriage certificate to determine the occupation of her father?
The 1871 census shows John (Brixton) & Ann living in Stoke Damerel. Ann's birthplace is given as Bow, Devon. This is near Zeal Monachorum, and on looking at the 1891 census, Ann is shown as widowed aged 45 born 'Seal Monachorum', Living with her is her 23 year old daughter Ann Eliz. CUMMINS or CUMMING.
John FORD married Ann CUMMING June qtr 1868, Newton Abbot district, vol 5b page 296. A birth registration for an Elizabeth Ann CUMMING was recorded in the December qtr 1867, Newton Abbot district (which covers Teignmouth) vol 5b page 118.
So, you may have to re-think Elizabeth Ann's origins.

Thanks for your prompt reply DOB7. I don't know where I got Elizabeths birth in Crediton from. It was of course Teignmouth. The Cumming/Cummins is interesting. I'll have to delve further
