Finding FUSSELLS

Hi,

I keep finding Fussells but none seem to be mine. 

The furthest Fussell back that I am definitely related to is Henry Fussell who married Sarah Bachelor. They married in Holborn 4th November 1851

I believe Henry was born in Hinton Blewett & then baptised 22 July 1827.

His parents are listed as Joseph and Ann Fussell and he apparently had siblings: Hester b abt 1816, Mary Ann b abt 1817 and John b abt 1820.

So far I have been unable to find more info about Joseph and Ann or their daughters.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Mary Ann bp. 4 May 1818. All info as above.

Maria bp. 25 Dec. 1824.    "       "      "
Charlotte bp. 17 Jan. 1830. "    "      "

There is also this marriage in Cameley, which is maybe a mile from Hinton Blewett.

Joseph Fussell ,Bachelor, married Ann Derrick ,Widow, 18 January 1816 St James, Cameley.
Witnesses: William Pool and Joseph Dudden.

Lots of info I didn't know.

As there were no census' prior to 1841, is there another way of finding family groups? 
Or do we just have to randomly find them individually?
(I am in Australia so can't get to the Somerset area to look for records, I have to rely on the internet)

www.freereg.org.uk is fantastic for checking records, but I haven't found a way to get a list of all children born to same parents. You seem to have to know they exist first?

Took a bit to work out how to use the somerset website, but finally found the Fussells.
 
Pity the records aren't available to view online.

Hi Karen

It may be worth joining the Yahoo Group for Somerset Hundreds. There are lots of keen researchers there & they are involved in transcribing PRs - although these are usually avaialble on FreeReg as well. You need to register interest in the particular Hundred you are interested in (Hinton Blewitt is in Chewton Hundred) and make contact on the Forum with your interests. Its all free and well worth the joining.

Be warned, Fussells are very widespread in north Somerset and can take some time to track down

www.freereg.org.uk is fantastic for checking records, but I haven't found a way to get a list of all children born to same parents. You seem to have to know they exist first?

The search function is rather basic, but you can use it to search for parents. It actually looks for any record which contains the requested surname and first name, whether or not they occur together. Say you enter "John" and "Smith" you will get all children whose father or mother had the surname Smith and where either the child or the father was called John (or the mother if that ever happened).  Of course with a name like that you will get a lot of false leads, but with less common names it can be manageable.  Using the less common of the mother's and father's names may help. Also narrowing the search to an individual parish, if you know where they lived.

There is also the problem that the Soundex option only applies to the surname. The search won't allow for any variation in  first names. If you search for Ann but she was recorded as Anne, she won't be found. Nor if she had a second name. With rarer surnames, it's often easier to just leave the firstname blank and get all records with that surname.

As has already been suggested, it may be worth joining the Yahoo Hundred group for the area you're interested in. In most cases the transcriptions used in FreeREG are also sent to the relevant Hundred group, as spreadsheet files. Members can download them and then search them in any way their spreadsheet program allows.
