Snooki,

What date are we talking about and what is the context? The only possibility I could find is that there was a farm called Bows which became part of Argaty estate, just outside Dunblane, in 1920; source "the Street and Place Names of Dunblane" by Archie McKerracher.

Snooki,

I think I have found what you are looking for. The Bows farm I mentioned in my previous post had previously been part of the Kilbryde estate. The History of Dunblane by Alexander Barty refers to the fact that church lands in Kilbryde were known as Boutoun, also spelled Bowton. He goes on to say that "The Bows farm was at one time in the occupation of three tenants known as Wester, Easter and Middle Bows. The name is a corruption of the Bow House". It looks like your ancestor was from the Kilbryde estate just outside of modern Dublane.

Snooki, If you go to memento-mori.co.uk they list burials in Dunblane Cathedral; there are five Gows; James Gow 30/9/1849, age 80; John Gow, no details; Mary Gow, 21/04/1909, age 75; Agnes Gow, nee Crawford, 12/9/1884, age 71 and Marion Gow, nee Fairlie 15/10/1879, age 79. Dunblane Cemetery is more recent burials, but there are no Gows listed.

There is also a church and graveyard in Kilbryde; the following link gives some details:- http://arts.st-andrews.ac.uk/~cmas/site.php?id=129107. I am not familiar with this church and I am sure that it is not in use as a church now. Indeed Barty's history of Dunblane states that "the Kirk of Kilbryde being in a state unfit for worship... the inhabitants walked to Dunblane.." The index to this book is rather basic but I did notice a reference in the text to a list of  licensed premises in 1831 which included Thomas Gow a grocer whose business was on Dunblane High Street. Hope all this helps.  Alex.

Hi there, I was born and raised at the bows farm, kilbryde, argaty for 21 years. My family have been running it for over 200 years.the Cameron's of the bows. I am the granddaughter of Ian Cameron, former owner of the farm. The little church down the road is a private church where only Cameron's and Campbell's are authorised to be buried there, I'm sure it is not open for worship, but there's no harm on going to visit it.if anyone thinks their family may have occupied the bows then please get in contact as you may find we are related..!

I've been researching the Drummonds in Kilbryde for some time now. The children of Colin Drummond were born in Bows/Bowhouse of Kilbryde between 1751 and 1766. The sponsor to one of them was David Gow. The next generation of Drummonds were born in Grangetown of Kilbryde between 1781 and 1793.  Going back to the Gows - Donald Gow married Margaret Drummond and their children were Margaret b 16/6/1722, Duncan b 19/1/1724, Patrick bap 2/7/1724, Donald b 30/8/1727, David b23/2/1729 all in Bow of Kilbride. Alexander Drummond sponsored four of the Gow children.  Does anyone know who the landlord of the Kilbryde Estate was and where I might get more information about the tenants?
