Ossett,Dewsbury, Yorkshire FOZARDS
« on: Friday 04 November 11 00:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I just thought and hoped that maybe if anyone who had a Thomas Fozard born abt 1818-21, ? Dewsbury area could add their comments maybe I'd eventually find 'my' Thomas Fozard- he's tricky.
Seen on 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 census with his wife and expanding family  but can't find his birth or parents.
Online he's been credited as 'George Thomas' son of John Fozard and Sarah Scott but this doesn't really fit...they already have a living and thriving son George b.1811 who alive and later has his own family, so why two living George boys in same family..not sure!

'My' Thomas Fozard marries Hannah Jagger in 1839 and spends his life 'till 1873 living in Ossett cum Gawthorpe, Yorkshire and raising five children, I'd love to find his 'real' parents...father definately called John Fozard but ?mothers name...attempts at finding her lead towards maybe Elizabeth Blakey or Ruth Varey/Varley but then I hit a 'brick wall' and can't find anything or it's maybe someone else all together..joys of genealogy!
Any help would be fantastic, Thanks

Hi

Just looked at the marriage of Thomas, his father was John as you say, one of the witnesses was Joseph Fozard maybe a brother?
The only birth I could see was for 1823 baptised 1825 to John & Elizabeth at St Peters in Leeds, a little later than you wanted

I thought I'd look at the non- conformist records. There are severeral earlier Fozards baptised at Ossett in the nonconformist chapel, but I couldn't find your Thomas.

I did find this marriage in the Quaker records, which would fit timewise. I can't see any births recorded to this couple:

John Fozard clothier married Phobe Hinchcliff 20 Apr 1815 Highflatts. Groom's abode Dewsbury.
Groom's father Zacharias Fozard late of Dewsbury, clothier. Groom's mother Achsah.
Brides father Joseph Hinchcliff shoemaker of Whinney in Shepley. Bride's mother Elizabeth.

John and Phoebe are together in Batley in 1841 and 1851, unfortunately alone.

Anne
Halifax/Huddersfield area West Yorkshire
Monmouthshire, Gloucestershire, Berkshire and nearby areas.
Bilcliffe one name study all areas.

Hi Sapper106 and Marmaduke123,
Thank you so much for your help, the info about Joseph Fozard should certainly help me to narrow down possible family members.

The info about John and Phoebe is new to me and looks promising, I've never heard of them before which actually is good and as you say the date of marriage fits for his birth year.
I didn't know there were Quakers in the Dewsbury area, but if it is them then maybe thats why I've been having such trouble finding Thomas's parents as they are not in 'regular' records.
I know its too soon to get too excited but thank you very much, its an interesting line for me to try and follow up, I'll get started on them asap. I've often wished that relations had more unusual names to help me track them down and hopefully I've got some here!
Thank you so much for your prompt help, Best Wishes, Lyn

I have a Poor Rate book in my possession from the 1790's for Ossett, which lists a Fozard (I forget his first name or initial) who was a druggist in Ossett. I am not at home right now but will dig this book out. If it's the same Fozard family then it's a snippet of info worth having.

Not located the poor rate book yet, but meanwhile I found this in my collection and wondered if it was of any use, it's in Ossett Parish Church burial ground.
