It's possible that when the New Romney Fencibles were disbanded in 1800 that your ancestor decided to stay on in the army and join the 28th Light Dragoons (which was later disbanded in 1802). As a sergeant, he'd probably built a military career, and he may have been sought after by the 28th LD.
