I interpret the record Margp found as reading that he died in hospital in New York.
On the New York Immigration page of the record it says the Sierra Morena arrived on 28th January 1919 with a crew of 28 - of which 6 deserted, one was discharged and one was left in hospital (and subsequently died - Roland).
This would reduce the crew to 20; the record then shows that 10 more were signed on in New York making the crew up to 30, ready for the next journey to Gibraltar in the beginning of April.
So it looks like poor old Roland only just made it to the USA
