Killed in France 1916 - Unable to find COMPLETE
« on: Wednesday 02 November 11 19:15 GMT (UK) »
I learned from other relatives that my Dad's cousin Roland Teasdale born in 1899 was killed in France in 1916 but I have been unable to find any record of him. His elder brother Frederick William Teasdale was also killed in France 24 Jul 1917 aged 19 . I have found his details.
Can anyone help me trace Roland who was my Dad's namesake.

Hi  When you say you haven't found any record of him, do you have any other details about Roland to help us out e.g. was he in the Army or another service ( you imply army but its best to ask), whereabouts in the country was he born, have you found him on any censuses. Sometimes we need more questions before we get to the answers :) and all information is helpful thanks.

Roland was born in North Shields in the 4th qtr of 1899. I am not sure which service he was in - another cousin told me he was killed in France in 1916 so I asssumed perhaps wrongly that he was in the army.
I should have looked at the photo I have of him in uniform which is I think a naval uniform. The cap badge has laurel leaves with an anchor in the middle surmounted by a crown. He is wearing what looks rather like a reefer jacket with a leather strap from the lapel into the breast pocket.

I have a copy of a postcard with Italian writing that we thought had been sent by my Dad's brother who was killed in France in 1918 but if Roland Teasdale was in the navy perhaps it was from him although there is no message on it from the sender.
I don't have a lot of information about him alas.

Thanks  Leanne for the link to the previous thread which I had not seen before. Irene - Might be helpful for the photo on that thread to be posted on to the Armed Forces World War one section and head it 'Uniform recognition please'. They are very helpful and it may be that the previous post was not spotted by a relevant expert on such uniforms. He must have been very young when he enlisted though.

Having googled the cap badge, is it possibly a Merchant navy badge?

There is a record on FindMyPast Merchant Navy records for a J R Teasdale born 1899 Northumberland. I don't have a sub to them but perhaps someone who has might be able to rule him in or out for you?
