Whiston, Rotherham - Hurt Family
« on: Wednesday 02 November 11 09:20 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the Hurt family who lived in the Rotherham area in the early 1700's. In particular I'm looking at the family of Thomas Hurt and Hannah Marcer who were married at Whiston on the 2nd February 1720, and who had about seven children between 1721 and 1739, all baptised at Whiston. I'm stuck. Is there anyone out there who knows the origin of Thomas? Also I'm interested in the origin of Hannah Hurt who married Benjamin Handley in 1724 in nearby Treeton. Any Hurt researcher who can help?

Hi 'asgaard'

Been there, seen it, read it, some time ago. Nevertheless many thanks for trying to help me. It is appreciated. I think that I've just about 'dug up' every bit of online information there is, but if someone can prove me wrong, that would be great.

I suspect that Hannah Hurt may have been a daughter of Valentine Hurt who married on the 10th February 1680 and died in 1692. I know that one of his children was baptised at Rotherham, so it's probable that any others he may have had were baptised there as well. As Hannah's last child was baptised in 1732, her birth would have to have been towards the end of the above period, i.e. probably after 1686.

If there is anyone out there with knowledge of Valentine's family or access to Rotherham baptisms or the book 'The Hurts of Haldworth', I would be grateful if they could contact me, even if it's just to tell me that Valentine didn't have a daughter named Hannah.
