Having used the rootsireland site for a number of years, I finally realised today that it is possible to make ADVANCED searches without entering anything in the SURNAME* box

For example, by simply entering the mother's surname as Delahunty, it is possible to find all the baptism records in a particular parish which have the MOTHER'S SURNAME recorded as Delahunty.

This also works for marriage records - you can get all the marriages where the mother of either the bride or groom was recorded as Delahunty.

This may already be known to many, but it has lead to a few new 'discoveries' for me today, so am happy to broadcast it.  :)

when searching by parish, the firstname search field has to be entered, but you can enter just an initial (no wildcard needed) if required.  (Using the Standard Search)

Maiden surnames are often not included on the Church of Ireland baptism records so the advanced search will not apply, also at the moment the advanced search doesn't work for counties Limerick and Sligo.

Hi Shane,
I assure that if you select a parish, and then enter only the mother's surname (without anything in firstname) you will get all the corresponding baptism or marriage records.

It looks like the firstname requirement I mentioned only applies to the Standard search - as you mentioned a search using just the maiden surname is allowed on the advanced option.

(post above edited re search requirements)

I hadn't noticed that! Even entering just one first name does give results in advanced search.

I have two questions about this:

-On the advanced search it doesn't seem to give you the results in a list - just "there are 2/4/6 etc records with this name or variants".  Or am I missing something?  The ordinary search gives you the results in a list with dates and tells you whether they are church or civil index.

-In the above case ("there are 4/6 etc records") I am told that it will cost X euros to view them. It is giving me the discount price right enough, but I thought I would be able to save searches and pay for 10 together. Or alternatively, pay 20 euros and then use it up with various searches later.
In the way it seems to be working, I could be paying 3 euros 50 for each record anyway, if I narrow it down to one, which I have usually tried to do in the past.

Still a good price, I'm not complaining!  But I did think I could go on a 20 euro spending spree......

The result count is normal for the Advanced search - it looks like you have to pay for the result set before you see a list.

I haven't paid for any advanced search results, although I have used the result count to estimate number of children in a family. I think the best way to use it would be to put in as much detail as you can - i.e. both parents names and also select a single parish. This would eliminate the possibility of duplicated parish and civil records.
