Presently putting a website together for people with canal ancestors, collecting newspaper articles on boatmen - free to search, though it's only a start right now.  Would get along much faster if my typing was better!
I should be uploading about 400 articles from the Cheshire Observer sometime this week - I've almost finished it.  One dated December 7th 1867 reports the bankruptcy of John Hampson of Lower Tranmere, boatman, and shows against his name, Hampson or Enson.  If anyone is looking for this family, I guess this might help.
I don;t know whether rootschat will let me give details of the site, if anyone is interested.  I'll check and come back on this.

Hi, Angela,

I can't see any reason why Rootschat would mind you giving a link to a separate website for folk with canal ancestors. Personally, I would think it very useful and I look forward to seeing it.

Best wishes, David

Well, if nobody minds, the site is www.spellweaver-online.co.uk.  I'd be grateful for the hits to drive the site up the search engines.  At the moment it appears on page 2 if you type in spellweaver-online, which is not too sad, but the site had a previous incarnation - fashion jewellery - so Google hasn't recognised the "Canal boatman" bit yet - Google, like God, works in mysterious ways!
If anybody has any material I can add, please get in touch, contributions welcome.

Hello!

I am looking to connect with others related to the Hampson family of Runcorn.  Recently learned that Robert Owen Hampson was likely my grandfather's father.  Eliza Cottier was his mother.  My grandfather was a Home Child sent to Canada in 1905 ... his background a mystery we are trying to solve.

Hello Jeepers,  Robert Owen Hampson has ample followers and to their credit there is much in print about his life, some conjecture, some in fact by DNA.  Robert is buried with his first wife Hannah Whitbread; along with son, William, and a Jane (1889) who died at 20 months.  He is in Runcorn Town Cemetery.  No headstone found. (2010)   Plot 11  Grave 766.  Which of his wives or mistress are you from?

Good Luck  Frank Ray.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for the posting - too bad no gravestone.  I have seen some of the discussion of ROH and from the paper trail I have, well, he is something!

I am from Eliza Cottier, the "lady" he lived with in the 1890's (while still married to Susan).  I do have some history from Angela re:  Hannah & her kids, Susan & her kids.  ROH parents Jane Owen And James Hampson.

Eliza was mother to the Jane #1 you mentioned.  Then also mother to Owen, Jane #2 (lived to adulthood) and Philip.  My grandfather we believe was Owen ... however we knew him as James Reginald Hollingsworth.   Sometime around 1896/98 Eliza returned to the IOM with the boys, Jane #2 went to relatives in IOM and then back in St Helens.  Where Eliza returned sometime between 1901-1905 with Philip, and died in 1910.

Owen went to the Industrial Home at Strathallan Hall 1899-1905, then Canada.  Philip remained with Eliza until 1906/7, when he went to the Liverpool Sheltering Home and to Canada 1909ish.

That's it in a nutshell.  Recent DNA connects myself to the grandaughter of Philip and we are waiting DNA for connection to Jane #2.  The paper trail indicates we are Hampson's biologically.  Trying to get to the bottom of it all.

Would love more info - both facts and conjecture.  Many unanswered questions.

Cheers

Anyone know of or have a photo of Robert Owen Hampson (B. 1852)?

Or know of any direct descendants of his that are alive?
