4th Battalion Suffolk Regt Medal Card
« on: Monday 31 October 11 13:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

Can anyone give me any further information on my Great Great Grandfather.  I can tell from his medal card that he was 651 Private (?) Harry Backhouse, and was awarded both the 1914 Star and Victory Medal.  It would appear he was discharged in March 1916, I'm thinking he was possibly wounded at Loos in September 1915 (this is a rough guess, but if discharges from The Army took as long as they do now back then, then it could be fairly accurate.  It would also appear from his pension record that he enlisted on 01.01.01, and resigned on 24.03.08, so I would guess he was recalled to The Colours at the outbreak of the war.

Thanks

Charlie

Charlie,

Unfortunately, not having an Ancestry subscription, I can't access your links or his medal index card.

He was a Territorial. The TF was formed in 1908, so he may have been in the militia previously. The record should tell you.

There should be a date of entry on the medal index card. If it is somewhere close to the 9th November 1914, then he was part of the original 1/4th draft. He would also have been awarded the British War, Victory Medals and the 1914 Star (Trio).

As to his discharge in 1916, is there a "List" reference on his MIC? If so, he was discharged due to sickness or wounds and should have received the Silver War Badge. To have been discharged to pension would suggest he was.

To help you read service / pension records, have a read through this and the associated pages:

Phil
Date of entry is 8th Nov it looks like 19?? But think its bad writing and should be 14 like you say 14 Trio but no clasp and roses.
SWB with discharge in 1916.
It does state 1/4th on his card.

Charlie ill have a look at his service record later tonight (after taking kids out in fancy dress!)

Ady,

Thanks for that, he would of been about 46 at that time, and having already been injured and through Loos and Aubers Ridge I can't say I blame him to be honest!  I've just found out his cousin was killed on 11/10/18 with the East Surrey's, just a month of the war left, it always gets me at this time of year!

Thanks

Charlie
