Edward Beckett, St Mary the Great, Cambridge - baptism 1777
« on: Monday 31 October 11 10:47 GMT (UK) »
Looking for marriage of parents of Edward Beckett bapt 1777 at St Mary the Great, Cambridge. Edward became Parish Clerk for the Holy Trinity parish in Cambridge c1814. His parents were Edward d 1805 aged 61, and Elizabeth ? d 1816 aged 79, and were buried at Holy Trinity.
Wondering if the Becketts were associated with St Mary's prior to 1777 (or perhaps came up from London) - does anyone have access to a copy of the church records for St Mary the Great.
Grateful for any assistance ... Jim

Hi Jim,

I can't see a marriage for Edward Becket(t) senior in Cambridgeshire or any other connection with Great St. Mary's.

Several trees on Ancestry give a marriage for him but as they may all have copied it from each other and Ancestry trees need to be treated with great caution, it may not be correct.

However you do say they may have come from London and there definitely is a marriage (I have just looked at the original register page) of an Edward Beckett to Elizabeth Stiles on 19 February 1776 at St. Luke, Finsbury.  Edward was a widower and Elizabeth a spinster.  Both of the parish.

Hi Selina,

Sorry for the lateness of this thanks for your post regarding the lack of a marriage for Edward Beckett in Cambridgeshire or other connection with Great St Mary's.
Our first Edward was a Shoemaker in Cambridge in 1791, and was there in 1777 when his son was christened. There was an Edward Beckett, Mustard Manufacturer in Finsbury from 1760's to c 1800 with several marriages over that period, thus 'appears' to be a different family.
Elizabeth may have been from another county and the marriage took place there and unfortunately has not shown up in IGI or elsewhere.
Appreciate the help.
Regards
Jim

Thanks Trish - had considered that one, but felt it was not too far from Finsbury and fitted also as the first marriage of the other Edward in business around there at the time.
On my line both father and son were shoemakers close to the University, and of young Edward's eight surviving children two sons were tailors and three daughters married tailors. Perhaps indicating some generational connection to Cambridge.
My g.g.grandfather William Beckett 1813 -1864, worked for Clays, the printers for Cambridge University Press from the mid 1800's to early 1900's
