Grandfathers first marriage

Hi, would like to know if there is anyway of finding out if my granfather had children from his first marriage? He married his first wife in 1923.

Try searching FreeBMD for their birth

enter surname and mother's maiden name, select registration district if known (otherwise just select county) and a date range.

If you could tell us the names of your grandfather and his first wife and place of marriage we might be able to help find any possible children.

John Henderson Nicoll and Annie Wright, married the 14th July 1923 at st marys church, Dundee.

the only birth i can find for the time frame you have using  nicoll  and wright as fathers surname and mothers maiden name is a gro consular birth for a hoariette  m nicoll  with a place name of habus ?!! where ever that is between 1926-1930 doubt it,s yours but were they known to be abroad at all  ( says he clutching gamely at a straw    )

Not sure if they lived or went abroad. All I know is my mum was the only one out of her 6 siblings to know my grandfather was married before he met my granmother and she always said she might have half siblings, so not sure if there was any but I found out him and annie divorced in 1940 so think if the were married for 17 years they might have had children.

Do you have a copy of your grandfather's divorce records?

I've looked at the National Archives of Scotland online catalogue and there is a reference to his divorce.

Reference CS258/8196
Title John H Nicoll v Annie Wright or Nicoll: Divorce
Dates 1942

You can view this reference at www.nas.gov.uk/catalogues/default.asp

If you get in touch with the archives you can either go along and view the file in person or you can request an estimate for them to send you a copy. This would give you information regarding how long your grandfather and his first wife had been separated before they divorced, the reasons for the divorce and may provide details as to whether there were any children.
