Looking for Ledwidge Ancestors
« on: Saturday 22 August 09 14:55 BST (UK) »
G'Day All, I am looking for My Great Grandfather , Oliver Ledwidge B.c1835, Married c1859, to Mary Daly B.c1840 . Oliver was a Woodcarver. They had 2 children Mary c1860 and John c1861 the family then moved to London, England about 1862/3. I have found them over there from that time on. John in the 1901Census says he was born in Dublin, Mary in 1911C says the same . Is there any Ledwidge's that can help or any on else that may be  of assistance.
Thanking you in advance.

Hello

Isee some  Ledwidges in the index to Shaw's Directory for Dublin for 1850 but am reluctant to give details unless requested as I do not wish to send you off  into to a wilderness .

The occupations are either tanners or brush makers and presumably relate to Oliver's father (if relevant)

An address, partial or otherwise, would be a great help

Regards

Quaxer.

Hello Ledwidge, I hope this is a starting point for you.

There is a birth listed here for an Oliver Ledwith born 1782 in the parish of St Paul's
It's a pay per view site, but it can be searched for free once you register

http://dublinnorth.brsgenealogy.com/quis.php?page=0&prevStartQuery=0

List here in the Griffiths valuation of Ireland is Oliver Ledwith with an address in Mabbot Street in the parish of St Thomas in the North inner city.

http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_results.php?familyname=ledwith&firstname=&countyname=DUBLIN%2C+CITY+OF&baronyname=&unionname=&parishname=&submit=Start+Searching

There is one listing for Oliver Ledwith in the 1851 Dublin Heads of households. It only lists what it says.
His address is 32 Mabbott Street in the parish of St Thomas.
There is also a listing for  William Ledwith at 1 Gloucester Place Upper also in the parish of St Thomas.

This is the only listings for Ledwith in tDublin arround that time.

Thanks for your assisstance its greatly appreciated, I had found Oliver Ledwith previously and had not discounted him as a possible Grandfather, as I believe the first son was often named  after paternal GF and second was named after maternal GF. I am not sure of this rule but had heard if it during my research.
Great site , the ask about Ireland site, hadn't seen that one before. Did a search just in Dublin and Co.Dublin for Ledwidge , found 27 now I will have to take a guess or spend a fortune and go through them all.

G'day Quaxer, I have had some luck on another site with another poster finding a reference to Oliver in a newspaper" Freemans Journal and Daily Advertiser" Dublin. wed. 27 march 1861 Mentioning Oliver Ledwidge, wood carving, of Leinster Rd. what Parish would that be in ? any idea? It will lead me to look in the parish registers for a marriage or kids baptisms.

Regards Graham
