John Barr of Beith and Sons
« on: Friday 28 October 11 03:28 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information about John Barr, (born c 1790), of Beith and his wife Jean Gilmour, (born c 1809).  He appears to have had four sons with Jean, namely Matthew, Francis, David and Allan, and three children with a previous wife, namely Janet, John and William.  His son Francis appears to have gone to Australia, but I'm not sure about the rest.  I think his son Allan was my great - great grandfather.

My Allan came to the US after being in Canada, and is listed in an 1861 Montreal census.  He was married to Christina Lamont, and may have been a gardener of some note.  He died in 1902 and had worked for a wealthy Quaker named T Wistar Brown in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA.  His children were John, Allan, Barbara, and Francis.
Thank you.

Hi jdbPA

I see from this post here on another forum http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/BARR/2011-10/1318352280 that Allan and wife Christina Lamont married in Scotland in 1856.

Reading on there, I think you found his marriage indexed on Familysearch  Not sure if you are aware that you can view the original image of the marriage cert on the official pay site Scotlands People, www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

The marriage cert would include details on his parents and let you work back with confidence.

Sorry about that.  I guess I should have made just one post.

Have the statutory marriage record and it looks like a match.  Allan Barr is listed as a gardener with his father as John Barr, a farmer and Allan's mother Jane Barr, maiden name Jane Gilmour.

Christina is listed as Christian, a factory worker with her father John Lamont a fisehrman, then the rest is less clear.  I think it has John deceased and mother Barbara Currie formerly Lamont, maiden name Duncan.
