Robert McGilton
« on: Thursday 27 October 11 16:25 BST (UK) »
Hey everyone was wondering if someone could help me out with a mystery that has puzzled me for quite a while.

Robert McGilton who was the son of James McGilton and Mary Jane McGaw/McCaw born 29/11/1876 in Tullygarvin, Ballygowan.

by the 1901 Census the family has moved to Ballyhalbert and Robert is there with his Mother and he's 24 years old, but after that he disappears i cant seem to trace him after that.

if anyone could help me out i would very much appreciate it.

Many Thanks
Philip

For reference, here's the family in 1901 census-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Ballyhalbert/Ballyhimlin/1256080

Mother, daughter Margaret/Maggie and a different son (James) here in 1911-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Ballyhalbert/Ballyhemlin/265155

Father died in 1889- "The Will of James M'Gilton late of Ballyhemlin County Down Farmer who died 25 August 1889 at same place was proved at Belfast by Francis Ewart (Junior) of Ganaway in said County Farmer Samuel Ross of Ballyhemlin Farmer and Mary Jane M'Gilton of Ballyhemlin Widow the Executors." Will with very detailed instrcutions on dividing property between sons James and Robert. See www.proni.gov.uk

Can't see a death for Robert in civil registration index (goes up to 1921 for Northern Ireland counties) or find him in 1911 Irish census.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Yeah thats him, me and my cousin found his Baptism Record in Ballygowan Pres Church while we were at Proni, i think the McGilton's owned some sort of mill out there at the time.

He just seems to disappear after the 1901 Census

Thanks
Philip

Hi Philip

I see you had posted the same query on the Belfast Forum recently and that someone had directed you to WW1 service records for a Robert McGilton of Co. Down on Ancestry. I would suggest, if possible, that you follow up on that lead, if for no other reason than to discount this person as your man.
