Whitfield family of Burton-wood
« on: Thursday 27 October 11 11:03 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have come to a brickwall on my Whitfield family and wondered if anyone could shed some light on the facts.

I have Esther Whitfield born 1838 Burton-wood who according to her christening is the daughter of Mary Whitfield and James Rylance ( I guess born out of wedlock )

Christening details are Esther Whitfield born 29 July 1838 and christened 19 Aug 1838 Burton - Wood Lancashire to Mary WHITFIELD and father James Rylance.

I thought that as her father was listed on her christening that her parents might have gone on to marry sometime post her birth but as yet I am unable to locate the marriage or indeed find either parent on any census.

Esther appears on both the 1841 census and 1851 census firstly with her Grandparents
 John Whitfield born 1786
Betty Whitfield ( Nee Pendleton) born 1786c
George Whitfield her Uncle born 1811
James Whitfield born 1816
Esther Whitfield born 1838
----------------------
1851
James Whitfield    40 Unmarried Uncle
Joseph Whitfield    31 Brother
Ellen Whitfield      34 Sister in law  ( nee Harrison )
John Whitfield     4 Nephew
Esther Whitfield    2 Niece
Ester Whitfield    13 Niece
-----------------------
So Esther is not with her mother Mary on either of these census , she goes on to marry twice after this and I have her tracked.
My query is Where is her mother ???

Mary Whitfield born 1816  ....she was christened on the 20 sept 1816 the daughter of John Whitfield and Betty Pendleton and had Esther Illegitimate daughter on the 29 July 1838 and that is the sum total of the information I have on her ?

--------------------
John Whitfield  and Betty Pendleton are also a brick wall .They married at St Mary the Virgin, Prescot, Lancashire, England on 15 Feb 1802 John Whitfield  (X), Labourer bachelor of Sutton and  Betty Pendleton - (X), spinster of Bold Witness: Thos. Grace; John Hunt.
I have no parents for either party
--------------------

Any help appreciated

This is unusual as when Esther marries,James Smith in Farnworth in 1858 ,James Rylance is again down as her father,I will have another look later if no one has found them for you,

Hi

Thankyou so much for the information I will follow it up and see if things fall into place.

Radcliff.. I thought the same as you ..unusual that her father James Rylance was named on her christening and indeed both her marriages

1st to James Smith in 1858 as you state

2nd marriage  on the 19 Feb 1866 to Thomas Turnstall

in 1858 James Ryland listed as a Clerk  father to Esther
in 1866 james Ryland listed as Labourer father to Esther

I'm still struggling to find him on census

Hi

I have just re looked at the 1841 census for Esther Whitfield with her grand parents and Uncles, and have noticed next door are a Rylance family  :D

Esther appears on both the 1841 census and 1851 census firstly with her Grandparents
1841
John Whitfield born 1786
Betty Whitfield ( Nee Pendleton) born 1786c
George Whitfield her Uncle born 1811
James Whitfield born 1816
Esther Whitfield born 1838

next door
Mary Rylance 70
Joseph Rylance 37

So I thought I would investigate the Rylance family mentioned, It appears Joseph was born to Joshua Rylance and Mary in 1802 according to his baptism on LOPR .

Joshua Rylance and Mary Tomlinson married on 22 Dec 1788 St Mary the Virgin, Prescot, Lancashire, England and were both from Sutton.

Their family looked like this...NOTE all dates Christening dates not Birth

Thomas Rylance 5 APR 1789 St Michael, Burtonwood, Lancashire, England
Ellen Rylance 14 Aug 1791 St Michael, Burtonwood, Lancashire, England
Ann Rylance 10 Nov 1793  St Wilfrid, Farnworth near Prescot, Lancashire, England
Mary Rylance 3 Jan 1796 St Wilfrid, Farnworth near Prescot, Lancashire, England
John Rylance 4 Mar 1798 St Wilfrid, Farnworth near Prescot, Lancashire, England
Joseph Rylance 6 Jul 1802 Pitt Street Chapel, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Ann Rylance 1 Jul 1806 Pitt Street Chapel, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
JAMES RYLANCE 6 Jul 1807 Tontine St Wesleyan Chapel, St Helens, Lancashire, England
Jenny Rylance 4 Feb 1810 Tontine St Wesleyan Chapel, St Helens, Lancashire, England

Am I jumping to conclusions, or could this be Esthers Fathers family ?????? any thoughts

Hi Judi2632,
I found a rootschat notification from you on an old email that doesnt open, but found you name on the forum.   I'm guessing you may have contacted me as I also have an Esther Whitfield in my family tree, from Nutgrove in Sutton, Prescot parish born 1818, parents Thomas & Mary Whitfield.

Let me know if I can be of any help.   :)

My gt gt grandad was John Whitfield.,b.c1818,in Burtonwood....Died Aug.1868,in Atherton.
He married Margaret Collister.,b.c1828,in Parr.,St.Helens.....Died 21st Sep.1900.
They married in Prescot,c1845

In 1851Census,they were living Parr Flat(?) with children,Peter(3) and Ellen(5mths)

In 1861Census,they were living in Lovers Lane.,Atherton, with children,Peter(13).,John(7).,William(3)and Elizabeth(under 1 yr).....no mention of Ellen, who would have been around 10yrs old...had she died?

1871Census,has Margaret as a widow,living 22,Lovers Lane.,Atherton,with children,John(18).,William(13).,Margaret(9).,Thomas(7.......my gt grandad)and Sarah E(1)

In the 1881.,1891Census,family has moved to 88,Mealhouse Lane.,Atherton

Margaret is dead in the 1901 Census, but daughter Sarah E(now married to John Richard Halloran)is at the same address, with her husband, her sister Margaret Whitfield, and nephew Thomas Whitfield,b.c1890(is this the son of Margaret?)

1911 finds the family has moved to 28,Elliot St.,Tyldesley,with daughter,Mary Emma(6).
Margaret and Thomas still live with them.

I am trying to find:-
1. The parents of John Whitfield.?
2. Was Thomas the illigitimate son of Margaret?...she was still down as single on 1911 Census, aged 49.
3. Did first daughter,Ellen,die young?

If anyone recognises any of these names, and could help me, I would be very grateful.

Elaine
