Yes, thanks for those replies. I've got quite a lot on the two Mary Anns (mother and daughter) throughout their lives. Charles Sharman deserted his wife Mary Ann (née March) on or about 15th November 1856, nine days after the baby Mary Ann was born. At the time they were at 52 Hare Street, which I could not find - hence my enquiry.
Charles remarried bigamously on 9th March 1861, but seems to appear as a Private in an army barracks in London in the following month's census. His new wife was Ann Baker and they married in Wiltshire - probably Chippenham (see my post in Rootschat's Wiltshire section). After that I have nothing on either of them.
The whole thing is so intriguing that I'm tempted to "chase" him more than is probably good for my sanity!
