DOMICAN Family Bedminster early 1800's
« on: Tuesday 25 October 11 21:45 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for information about the Domican family from Bedminster in the early 1800's.

My Great Great Grandfather was James Domican a Master Mariner b1841 Bedminster d1912 Cardiff and I believe that his father was John Domican b1801 d1876.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Suz, I have already seen these census entries but thank you anyway.

I know that the family lived in Bedminster and some moved over to Cardiff later in the 1800's so I am trying to find out where they came from originally (census indicates Cumbria),if any remained in Bedminster and what happened to them.

Also you can see from the 1851 Census that the name is mis-spelt as Dummican, I have come across this in a few searches pre-1800 and wonder if the name has evolved over the years.

On further viewing of 1841 census I notice that John Domican 35 was not b Somerset -at first it looks like there is a "Y" = born in county but taking another look it seems to be "S" =Scotland and his p.o.b. is transcribed Ireland!!!!!

1861 gives his p.o.b. as Maryport Cumberland -so probably he stated he was b Scotland in 1841 .

The name woud be written as heard by whoever was filling the form etc in.

in 1841 england census there are a few "Domican"s b. Cumberland Northumberland & Somerset.
1851 there is one Domican b Middlesex and then your family entered as Dummican
Possibly others have been written differently.

.

If you put a post on the Cumberland section asking for a baptism for John b Maryport it may help you get further back and find his family origins -I would also include in your post the information you already have (census etc) this saves duplicate look ups
You state you would like to find out "what happened to them" - do you mean after the 1911 census - have you information on them until then -if you could post the information you have (census .bmd etc ) on each member of the family - or give more details on the type of info you require -that would help us

Hope this helps

Hi Suz, as you know I am a novice on here so thanks for thepointers on the information to include in my posts.

I will do as you suggest and post in the Cumberland section to try to find origins of John. I know about the part of the family that came to Cardiff but know very little about anyone who might have remained in Bedminster. I believe that Thomas b1845 d1876 stayed and raised a family so perhaps posting specifically about him in this section might be the way forward.

Hi
I am another great great grandson of James Domican and am quite new to this genealogy lark but I have found a few good links on ancestry.co and a relative from another tree (that I don't actually know) has added a photo of James for me to see if you haven't seen it previously. I found your post on here by searching James' name on Google and I am fascinated to have come across someone else tracing him.

Hi Andy, sorry to disappoint but I am the other great great grandson who added the photo of James Domican so I am afraid not another tracing him.
