Victuallers in London

     I need help to find Robert Osborn, Victualler of Greys Inn Lane London.   I am guessing that the time frame would be after 1800. Sorry I cannot be more specific than that. If it is him, he and wife Elizabeth Jackson Osborn had their last child  in Little Haddam in 1792. There were probably lots of Victuallers in the area or possibly thats his home address with his occupation. Did victuallers live on the job.

Can't find anyting obvious in the 1841 census.

Victuallers were basically grocers, so one would assume that he lived above his shop which would be in greys inn rd. He could however also have been a victualler to the army or the navy and that was his home address. In that case he would have been supplying one or the other with all their food and hardware supplies other than arms and munitions.
It's also possible he was a licenced victualler in which case he would have run a pulic house and most likely lived above. If you know what no greys inn rd it should be possible to find out what sort of premises it was at that time or maybe still is.

My thanks to you PastMagic, John915 and Rosie99 for the information you have given.  I will look at these sites and see what can be found and they may lead to other info.  No number on Greys Inn Road unfortunately or the year.  The old story of 'if only someone had put one more bit of info down'. Thats family research isn't it.   My thanks.

The source of the info together with the spelling Greys MAY be an added clue.

Just reading through this thread, the spelling should be Gray's Inn Lane, it is now Gray's Inn Road. You can google the road and the history of the area running from Holborn up through Clerkenwell is described. This info might help in your quest.
