Williams family at Llanrumney Hall, St Mellons

Hi

Could anyone throw some light for me on the Williams family who lived at Llanrumney Hall, St Mellons during 1890s?

G C Williams was a JP living at Llanrumney Hall around this time and it would really help if I could find some information about him.

George Crofts Williams was the Magistrate for Monmouthshire.
1881 aged 41 he lived at Llanrumney Hall and was unmarried. He was born in the Parish of Roath Cardiff June Q 1839.
If you would like a photograph of the Hall we took one last week.

".....The Roath Court Estate

Charles Williams, a tanner from Caerleon, Mon. came to Cardiff in the mid 18th century. His son married a daughter of the David family of Fairwater, Llandaff, and came into possession of some land in Whitchurch & Llandaff. A later descendant Charles Crofts Williams settled at Roath Court, Roath, Cardiff (previously occupied by John Matthews Richards - see above) after his marriage to his cousin Blanch Phillips of Llantarnam, Mon.in 1836. He was active in the public life of Cardiff being an Alderman and Mayor several times. He purchased a large amount of land which became available with the Enclosure of the Heath in 1835, mostly around Albany Road & Richmond Road in Roath. His eldest son and his descendants occupied Roath Court for some years afterward, whilst his younger son acquired Llanrumney Hall, St.Mellons, Mon (on the eastern outskirts of Cardiff).....

.....there are roads in Roath area which show the link - Croft St.in particular.

The family home Roath Court still exists as a Funeral Home."

Hi Richview and Pastmagic  and thank you so much for the information you have provided, it has certainly helped.

The reason I asked the question is I am trying to find the parents of my ggrandfather William Charles Williams. A family story says he was the son of a 'judge' who died when he choked on a cigar.

William Charles Williams was a market gardener most of his life in Rumney  so the story is unlikely but when I saw in the Wrights Directory 1893-4 a
G C Williams JP living at Llanrumney Hall, I have been trying to find some information on this chap, unsuccessfully until your help.

Unfortunately it does not look good as GC Williams was younger than my GGrandfather (born circa 1820 -1831) .....oh well back to the drawing board

Thanks to both you and Richview for your interest

Unfortunately William Charles Williams was born between 1820 & 1831 so is not on the BMD records. His marriage is not there either which leads me to suspect that he never married the woman (Norah Ford nee Hearn) he was living with.

As for Census records, he only shows up on 1881 records (RG11;Piece: 5289;Folio:132; Page:13), I cannot find him before or after. There are also possible discrepancies on the 1881 Census, ie the age of him and his 'wife' does not agree with death certs and his birthplace of Worcestershire may also be susect.... all a bit of a mystery!

In the 1991 Census, some of his children are living at the 1881 address but I just cannot find William Charles Williams. He is an elusive chap and certainly  my brick wall

Perhaps you need to look in Worcestershire for William's father, as 1881 says his birthplace was Worcester.

Many thanks for finding my old thread; should anyone be interested (or hopefully be looking for the same William Charles Williams) it saves me going over it again.

The reason for this second thread was a possible connection to a Williams who was a JP but alas in this case, it is unlikely.

It does seem a shame that as the Williams name is so common, not many people bother researching it, even though there must be a lot of Williams's descendants out there as a result!   Maybe too much of a challenge? 

As to looking at Worcester, I have spent many a happy hour at Worcester RO but with little to show and given the discrepancies on the 1881 Census  and lack of marriage certificate, I must now consider the possibility of 'Worcester' also being inncorrect.

This second thread has at least brought forward  a very kind offer of help from another Rootschat member  who actually lives in Rumney and even if nothing is found, that is in itself a result.

Hello 

The Lancet for 1838-9 (in 2 volumes), has a case at Worcester Autumn Assizes before Mr Justice Williams. The case was "The Master, Wardens, and Society of the Apothecaries' Company v.Harrison"

Obviously it doesn't have to be your ancestor but it it worth looking into, if only to rule him out. There should be more about him in the Assize Court Records:

also perhaps he can be found in 1841/51 Census records.

Modified - Mr Justice Williams is mentioned with Mr Baron Alderson, as being on the Oxford Circuit in July 1849 (London Gazette, 5th July 1849), including at Worcester on Saturday July 13th 1849.
