I looked on Abebooks for your book but was unsuccessful.  However, I came across the following which I suspect must be the Charles you mentioned:

Hi all,
Charles Beatts was supposed to be a ships captain and i have been told that hi was lost at sea off the coast of America leaving his wife and children to look after themselves back in Dundee. I thing the widow was Mary McLean but not sure.

Thanks Tim

Hi

Do you have an age and a death year for him and where he was born, can you give all the details on his wife and children.
