Ivinson family Cumberland 1780-1861 (Primarily Cumrew area)
« on: Friday 21 October 11 14:20 BST (UK) »
I am a senior docent at the Laramie Plains Museum in Laramie, Wyoming, USA.  I am researching Edward Ivinson. The museum is in his former Mansion. He was very wealthy and a major benefactor to the town.  I believe his father Thomas was baptized 1802 in or near Cumrew where his probable grandfather, Joshua, had a farm.

Specifically I am trying to confirm Thomas's birth place and his marriage to Sarah Hewitson (possibly Hewetson or Hewiston).  She was baptized 1805 (location unknown at this time).

Thomas moved to St. Croix Danish West Indies as early as 1823.  He was a plantation manager and later an owner of Cinnamon Bay Plantation on St. John.  His children all returned to England.  Edward, John, Joshua and Thomas Jr noted as pupils in Brampton in 1841 English census (listed a "foreign parts" born).  Most likely at Croft House Academy.  Daughter Frances Ellen noted living with grandparents Joshua and Ellanor (various spellings) in the 1851 English census in Cumrew (listed birth place as "West Indies"). Thomas Jr noted living with uncle Edward in 1851 census in Unthank (also listed birth place as West Indies). John noted in his 1885 obit as having trained as machinist in England. Edward noted in 1851 census in Carlisle (drapers helper - also listed birth place as West Indies). Hannah noted as servant in Staffield in 1861 census (also listed birth place as West Indies).  Joshua Jr and Thomas Jr not found after dates above.  All others moved to USA.  Thomas Sr died in Danish West Indies 1857.  Wife Sarah and daughter Emma (according to oral history) died at sea on a voyage to or from England (between 1841 and 1846).

Happy to share Thomas's life history and complete history of Edward (died USA 1928) with anyone who desires it (but I warn that is a long story).

Pretty much looks like a dead end at this time. I may pursue hiring a researcher at later time though.
Thanks for everyone's input!!

I would like any information on Thomas Ivinson.  I am trying to locate the plantation he managed on St.Croix, called River Estate.  This is where his children were born.  His daughter Hannah is my 3rd great grandmother.  Any info on him would be greatly appreciated.
