Boer War enlisted overseas - HUTTON
« on: Friday 21 October 11 13:00 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for any records on my great grandfather, Archibald Hutton. b. 20 Aug 1882, Collingwood VIC. Married Ellen Ing (b. 23 Feb 1891, Cowwar VIC) on 8 Jan 1813.

Specifically, I'm looking for his Boer War records. I believe that he left on board a ship transporting horses to the war, and he was looking after the horses. Once in South Africa, he lied about his age in order to enlist. He was in a light horse regiment, probably a Victorian one.

He doesn't seem to be on any of the records at the Victorian Records Office. Does anybody know if there are any records/ ways of finding records for those who did not enlist until they were already in South Africa??

Many thanks,
CRodda.

Hi CRodda,

I do know that very few records for Boer War servicemen have been retained.  Those that have survived can usually be found in the NAA catalogue.

http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/using/search/ (search as a guest)

Use Namesearch (top menu bar) to search for Boer War records.

He does not appear on the AWM's Boer War nominal roll
http://www.awm.gov.au/research/infosheets/south_africa.asp

The Oz-Boer database has an A. HUTTON listed.  If you click on the person corresponding to the source number (source#) you can email them and perhaps get more info.

I have found a Private A HUTTON  #2022 who was a member of Doyles Australian Scouts Regiment in what I would think was the 2nd Boer War in 1902.  There is no other information available except an address - probably for a medal, at Buln Buln East, Gippsland.

I suggest you google for more info on Doyles Australian Scouts.

Hopefully this is your Archibald.

Wow! Thankyou all for your help :)
It would make sense that the A Hutton in Doyle's Australian Scounts is the one that I am looking for - I know that the family certainly settled in this area. Of course, this is not certain - but thankyou, this is further than I have got in a long time :)

Hi CRodda,
Have you all you need in regard to ARCHIBALD's parents' earlier days?

They are on the electoral rolls and both Archibald and Ellen died at Sale.  There were also ING's on the early rolls.

There is no other A HUTTON with an Australian connection on the medal list.  I would say it is your man.

There are a number of Boer War websites...perhaps you could make contact with your query.

Cheers

HUTTON-

Charles Benjamin
Archibald
Ellen

are buried at Sale Cemetery, the couple together, and Charles in close proximity.
I can furnish details if you need them.

I am able to send photos of their headstones to you, but will need a private email address to do so.  This- if you choose to give it- must be  provided through Rootschat's Personal Message system ;D
