I agree with most of what's been said - the production was pretty awful, the presenter completely wrong for the subject matter, and the format (especially repeating and recapping every 3 mins like we're all bl***y gold fish) tiresome and irritating.

Having said that, it did have some redeeming qualities - the veterans recollections and the oral testomonies of those involved, for instance. Would love to have seen and heard much more of those.

And yes, I cringed at the "St Neots in Hertfordshire" bit too - seems history isn't the only subject that seems to have fallen by the educational wayside these days!

I was really looking forward to this programme and was most disappointed :(

I can only agree with most of what's already been said. It was very disappointing.

I like Chris Hollins but have to agree that he's not really the person for a programme like this was supposed to be.

It seemed to me that they'd decided on a handful of 'historical' events in advance and then tacked the so called genealogy onto it. There was very little to hold the attention with the latter because there was no 'thrill of the hunt' for the ancestors . Apart from an almost gratuitous glimpse of a census page, there was no genealogy that I could see - just shots of a blonde actress called Lulu sailing out of Dover harbour, trying to look wistful.

None of the 3 participants seemed that interested or thrilled. I'm sure they all probably already knew they had ancestors involved in Dunkirk. After all, it wasn't that long ago.

This may well be the riposte to those RCers who always comment on episodes of WDYTYA pleading for them to do 'real' people i.e. it doesn't work!

I might tune in next week if only to make sure that episode 1 wasn't just an aberration. However, I suspect it wasn't!!

What a shame!

I am a bit worried they showed the best one first and it may be all downhill from here ::)

i havent yet watched the progam but have it sky plussed, however i would say give this a chance after all Dr Nick Barrett is behind it and he also was behind WDYTYA. i saw an article in the paper today abut the next people being related to the jack the ripper case - not him obviously as we don't know who he is but the policeman a victim and a newspaper man the lady on this program said that they only told them little facts at a time so the truth is slowly revealed. i think the idea is to find famous or infamous people / events in history and to bring them to the present day which obviously makes these events seem a lot more real when you have an attachment to them.
i do hope it is good.  :)

Found out about this program on RC, set the recorder and it screwed up.

However just watching the repeat - Saturday 18:00 to 19:00.

Agree with previous posters.  Quite dissappointed.

I disagree. I think the format of WDYTYA doesn't demand that a celebrity is the subject. It could be anyone - the celebrity simply ensures a certain level of interest from people who may not otherwise watch.   I've watched and enjoyed several episodes were I've never even heard of the celebrity involved, so it may as well have been Joe Bloggs off the street!

Did anyone ever watch that programme where they connected real people to royalty? Parts of that were absolutely fascinating.

So You Think you are a Royal ?

Great program and I quite enjoyed this apart from Chris Hollins' narration. I have never come across this chap before and find that his voice for me doesn't work on these type of programs. Apart from that the program was facinating, having an ancestor take part in this it was interesting to see more about this. I found the ending somewhat odd as we were lead to believe there was some connection between the three people taking apart other than the obvious subject issue but apart from one possibly towing the other boat there wasn't anything.

If not then who?

when you consider the BBC coverage of this year's royal wedding was an unmitigated embarrassment, and presumably that was with their top people, it makes me wonder who would have been better?
