Thanks Maggie,  I did do a search but failed to find anything. Maybe someone in the magical rootschatte 'ether' will amalgamate the threads for us ::) ;)  post-script...   Thanks Berlin-Bob ;)

I must say that the posts are much more interesting than the programme was!

..and thanks to kooky and Winterbloom for replying, glad you feel the same way.

Fue, excellent idea if some kindly Mod would merge the topics.   I think you were spot on in your original 'don't bother' - what a shame

I recorded the programme and have just watched it and I thought it was good but then I find anything on Dunkirk interesting as my Dad was there.

As for it being random people who new nothing about their family history at least one of them had done some on their family history.

They applied to go on the show as there was advertisements and if you get emails from find my past they were asking for people to apply on there.

They are doing a different topic every week, next weeks is Titanic.

We all ask why WDYTYR does not do ordinary people well this is doing ordinary people. When you think nearly all the stars on WDYTYR know very little or nothing about their family history before they go on the programme so what is the difference??? other than most if not all the stars could afford to get the help themselves where as "ordinary" people can't.

The concept of the programme is fine and theoretically should appeal to a number of enthusiasts on Rootschat as it fits the bill as regards "ordinary" people involved in the research.

Unfortunately the execution and presentation of the programme left a lot to be desired and without the padding and repetition the whole thing could have been condensed to 15 minutes of reasonable viewing.

Isn't this the fault of most programmes now ....the padding and repetition. They must film enough to fill a half hour programme without lenghty introductions and continual repeats throughout programmes.Perhaps they think we have poor memories.

Couldn't agree more Falkyrn, I was very disappointed with the presentation and wrong presenter!

Best bits were the veterans stories.

I felt the family history connection was only an aside to the social history content.
If you want a better insight to ww2, then the History Channel are rerunning The World at War with great original footage.

I had been looking forward to this programme, but switched over 20 minutes into it.
Rightly or wrongly I think it was just one big advert for Find my Past :(

I may have got hold of the wrong end of the stick (always a possibility with me!) but I thought that the stories were going to be traced using the FindMyPast resources??

Hi all

Yes I agree with Falkryn - It's a shame because I love the idea of exploring the social history side of genealogy.  But the execution & presentation of this show really left me cold.  The real turn off for me I'm afraid was the presenter.  I really didn't warm to him.  HetalkedsofastthatIcouldnot keepupwithwhathewastryingtotellme - so thank goodness he repeated everything at least twice  ;D.

I did think though that the man on the show (grandson of Alf) could have been any ancestor of any of the thousands of men on that beach - and I suspect that his grandpa Alf was no where near either of those cockle boats.  I am wondering if he was selected because his grandfather had made that recording for one of the War museums?

I will persevere with the show because I think some of the topics they will be covering are really interesting. Perhaps Chris Hollins will slow down in his narration and stop repeating himself :D
