The marriage certificate arrived yesterday. It has his fathers name "Phillip Usher Glissan" and his profession is Gentleman. Does that mean he is retired or wealthy? The (NLI Film Pos. 2483) reference, could you explain where this film is available to view
For Benjamin Glissan it has residence at the time of marriage being in Shifnal Parish, Shropshire so no indication of being from Ireland there.

I looked on World Connect.com and found entries for Glissan from Ireland and even a doctor in the 1850's so I have sent an email to them, hopefully it is still a valid address.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

NLI stands for the National Library of Ireland, which is where you can view the RC micro-films.

The pay-website of the Irish Family History Foundation (www.rootsireland.ie) has transcripts for a number of RC parish in North Tipperary. It might be worth checkin their list of sources to see if Borrisokane is included.

WOW, eleven hundred pounds, that must have been a big debt to leave to pay to non family members. Maybe he purchased a pub or 2.
I am going to try and contact someone on the Scottish section of Rootschat to see if I can get help in relation to his medical training in Scotland, maybe there is some information in his registration as a doctor, or when he enrolled there may be some information about who paid for his eduction or his family background.

I'll chase up George Harrie Paddock

I finally got some information back from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, below is the essence of their reply;

"Thank you for your email.  Benjamin John Glissan appears in our register of licentiates on 13th January 1871.  The details recorded are as follows:

·         Age: 21

·         Place of birth: Sopwell Hall

·         Present place of residence: Dublin

·         Where educated: Galway

He first appears in the Medical Register of 1874, listed as residing in Breconshire.  In later editions, however, he is listed at the West Street address you have given below.  Later editions of the Medical Directory also indicate that he gained the qualification of M.D. from Durham University in 1898."

I googled Sopwell Hall and found it in Tipperary, it is an historic home, but there is no mention of Glissan's living there. Would anyone have any further local knowledge of the home or of records for it's inhabitants during the 1850's.
I have also established that his fathers name was Phillip Usher Glissan.
I look forward to your replies.

The surnames associated with the Hall itself are Sadleir, and later Trench (Lord Ashtown). You can see a list of the heads of household at Sopwell townland, where Sopwell Hall was located, on Griffith's Valuation. This entry is dated 1852.

  Sopwell townland

Maybe Benjamin's family were living near the Estate, or his father worked there ?

No sign that I see of a Phillip Glissan on Griffiths...

The National Library has a rental of the Trench estates in Tipperary might be worthwhile having a look at it - a bit of a long shot as it seems Philip Glissane was not renting land in the area but as Shane says was possibly working on the estate - perhaps estate manager, land agent or similar.

I checked rootsireland as they have Borrisokand RC records from 1821 - nothing for Benjamin Glissane - 3 R.C. church records in 1848 for Edward, Mary and William Gleeson with father Philip. Doesn't seem these are relevant.
Unfortunately the Borrisokane Church of Ireland records are only available from 1877 the earlier ones don't seem to have survived.
