Ben Glissan, born 1850 Sopwell, Uskane parish
« on: Friday 21 October 11 06:18 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help!!
I am looking for further information about the birth and family of Benjamin John Glissan, in the English census he is listed as being born 1850 in Sopwell, Co Tipperary. He is a Doctor and I think he trained in Scotland. I have his ancestors also from the census and his son moving to Australia in 1914.
Anu help with the Irish family would be appreciated.

Hi everyone  :)
1881 Benjamin is in Wrockwardine Shrops, grocers shopm working as a Doctor.
He's born in Ireland 31 yrs of age, he has letters after his name which, I'm sorry, I
don't know where he gained his degrees.
Could be helpful.
Wife Sarah 32 and his ma in law Sarah Freeman.
2 step sons & one son.

Shane, I can't be sure of his religion, his son married in a registry office in Sydney and his wife was a catholic on her death certificate.

Found a possible listing for Ben in a Medical Directory of 1898, which shows his qualifications.

There's a possible marriage match for Ben on FreeBMD - but the wife's surname is Cureton not Freeman as I'd expect based on the 1881 census...

 Quarter/Year : Sep 1877
 Registration District : Shiffnal
  Sarah Cureton
  Benjamin John Glissan
 Volume: 6a
 Page: 1025

The district of Shiffnal covers parts of Shropshire and Staffordshire - which could fit with his location on the 1881 returns.

A marriage cert should show his father's name and occupation, which might help in a search for the family in Tipperary - e.g. on Griffith's

Hi  :)
Cureton marriage will be right as that was the name of his two step sons in 1881 census.
Was it Francis R.D his natural son who went to Oz?
Benjamin is a widow in 1901 with Francis.
I'm sorry I can't read Francis occupation.
There is a 12 yr old son Edmund, not sure if he's the one who went to Oz.
Thank you

well spotted - I completely missed that the step-sons were Currton - it was the mother in law's surname of Freeman that threw me. I'd say it's well worth following up the marriage - perfect match to his full name..
