The Legender's are part of my family history too, through the Chapman Legender line (father of your Isaac Alexander Legender), but from elder brother James b.1833 (twin brother of John Wright).  I have quite a lot of info now for the Legender siblings, which you can find on my Ancestry tree, Linz family tree, if you're interested.  At the moment I only go back as far as parents Isaac Legender (b.1754 tbc) and Mary Jacobs, married in Mistley Essex in 1773.  I think Isaac's parents may be Isaac and Sarah but not sure yet.  If anyone has more info to get me further back, that would be great!  This is so addictive isn't it?!

Great to hear from you.  Sounds like we have got to a similar spot in terms of how far back we have gone.  I have a copy of a family tree that the Legenders here in Australia put together, however I have no other documents to support it.  I will follow up with my sister who made initial contact with them and see if she can ask them for copies of docs to be sent through.

Thanks and I will keep in contact.

Christay  :)

Thanks both of you for replying!  Most of my info comes from census records and BMD searches (i've been going to Newcastle city library to search for free) but the really old stuff is harder to come by!  Would be great to exchange notes!

Hi, I'm new to this site, and to chat rooms in general.  However, I came across your reference to Chapman Legender Wright.  Uncle Gens, as he was known in my family, is almost a relative!  My father's aunt, Alice Whitehead, was described as Uncle Gens live-in housekeeper, or common-law wife as we would call her now.  Legender is my father's middle name, mine too, and now my son's.

Although not directly related the seemingly rare name has always been of interest.  Anything you can add will be of interest.

Regards,
Steve (Legender)

Hi, the legender family as you can see from the thread came to Tyneside form Essex (manningtree ) and maybe before from France - Heugeunots?
They were mainly mariners - hence the move up North.

several of us have corresponded by email in the past so not all info is listed here. Once you have posted 3 times you can use the PM system - happy to provide further info needed.

Legender bible page

Hi all
I have a page from the family bible listing the children of Isaac and Mary Legender, starting with "Isaac Legender was Born in Mistly in 1777 (indecipherable) died & was buried Mistly ...
1779 January 4 Chapman John Legender was born in Mistly."
Then listed are Betsy-1781, Mary-1784, Mary-1785, Isaac-1786, Sukey-1787, James Alexander-1789, John Jacobs-1791, Chapman-1792, William-1796 ? (not sure of that date).
My grandfather, Legender William Myers, told me we were descended from a couple of brothers, Hugenots, who emigrated to Mistly from France just before the massacre of St Bartholomews Eve in 1572.
