WILLCOX/HARRISON information
« on: Thursday 20 October 11 10:52 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage certificate for Hannah Louisa Willcox to David Edward Powell, at St Josephs church, Camperdown in NSW 1907.  On the certificate it states that Hannah's father was Henry Willcox, painter, whereabouts unknown and her mother was Jane Harrison, deceased. Hannah was a minor, 20 years old, living at Golden Grove. I have searched NSW BDM and other sites but am unable to find a birth certificate for Hannah or anything on Jane Harrison or Henry Willcox.  Could anyone advise where to next.  Thanks

Hi there,

Some thoughts ...

As she was not yet 21 years, who gave consent to her marriage?  They should be related to her, and perhaps searching for them would lead to her.

Her marriage cert should give you where she was born, her occupation and her age and her status, was she a widow?

What were the names of the witnesses?  Could they be related to her

She may have been born interstate or overseas ... Have you tried the other colonies, or searched through passenger lists inbound to any of the colonies.

On her d.c., what is recorded re the question How Long in the colonies, and also for her place of birth

Hope these thoughts help...

Cheers,  JM

Thank you all so much for your input, you have given me renewed hope. On the copy I have of the marriage certificate the writing is hard to read but the consent seems to be given by a W Ridley Dep. Re...Gen....being ...diary of minors.  Would anyone know what this department was, as I could possibly start searching there?

Can you take a snip of that part of that mc so that some of the RChatters can help decipher that bit please. Don't attach an image of all the mc as that is a copyright issue.

Give the snip a simple file name and attach it to a reply,  ;D    (Click on the Attach a photograph or image and other options button on the RChat dialogue box that you use to type up your posts.  It is in blue above the Post button.)

Cheers,  JM

 ;D  ;D  ;D

Found Mr Ridley  ;) at the Registrar General's .... as in the NSW BDM Registrar General's Office in Sydney...

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/14324575 17 July 1900  SMH where he was attending a funeral as a representative of  the Reg Gen's dept.

I will try to find info about the "diary of minors",  I haven't known of that before your post, so I will be thrilled when I get that sorted, it may well be full of information about other minors who sought to marry before turning 21 years of age, and unable to obtain the consent of their parents.

Cheers, from a happy JM, delighted with something "new" to check out re the NSW BDM ways in the decades pre WWI.
