If no-one replies in the meantime, I'll be popping down the records office in Bridgend so will have a look in the burial records for Llan and Maesteg.

Any idea of the religious denomination? Just checking as there are a few small graveyards in some of the chapels, although I have no idea when the burials in these places would have started or finished.

If I get time (and assuming I can find any records), I'll try to get a photo of the grave if I can find it

Hi Della, bit of a funny one here I'm afraid.

I've found George buried in Maesteg Cemetary, but no sign of his wife or Iris. It's been quite hard locating them in all honesty.

There was no record for any of them in Llangynwyd Cemetary (using the GFHS guides), so I checked the Maesteg Burials CD (again, GFHS).

Nothing in the transcriptions of the records for all three of them, so I checked the scans of the original books. George appears as living in 50 Coegnant Road, burial date of 17/10/1946. Unconsecrated grave section A.M., plot 962.

However, there is nothing in the scans for Iris (checked 1918/1919), or Sarah (checked 1946/1947)??

I've not got time to pop up the cemetary today, but am off on Thursday so I will pop up then and see the groundsmen to get them to show me where the grave is - I will get a photo regardless.

Typically, because the burial of George has not been transcribed, there is no x-ref to whoever else is buried in the same grave. I may be able to find out more on Thursday, but it's a start

Hi Halfasheep
Many thanks for the work your doing you have got further in one week than I managed in three years, could the reason Charles is in unconsecrated ground be due to the fact that he committed suicide, he cut his throat with a razor so it says on his death certificate. As for Sarah I really don't now what to say I cant seem to get anywere with that one, she could be buried with Charles I suppose hopefully you might be able to shed some light on it.I know that Iris's parents David Edmund Raymond and Esther Ann Raymond are buried in Llan I have seen their grave and all their other children including my father are buried there.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Once again many thanks, Della

I think the unconsecrated ground part of it is just to separate it from the Roman Catholic plots (they were separate intially, but everyone is mixed in now), although back then it is possible.

In Llan cemetary, the grave stones of suicide burials are actually facing the opposite way to the "normal" burials as was apparently the custom.

Do you have the death certificate for Sarah? I assume that you do from the details you have provided, and suspect that she was living in Coegnant road at the time. Any further info you can give me may help me locate her.

Interestingly, I have been going back through the grave records in Maesteg. They list them at the time of the first internment, and then add subsequent internments under the original entry (i.e. first burial in 1919 is the first entry, and then 1942 is added, 1943, etc).

I cannot find an internment for Iris in 1919, but neither is there a record for 17/10/1946 for Charles, so presumably he is not the first burial in that grave - possible he is in with his parents? Do you have any details on them - it may lead me back though to the original grave record and it may turn up some more relatives

Della, I hate to put a massive stick in the spoke of your bike wheel, but are you aware that George may have been married prior to Sarah?

I've just found a burial for Mary Charles, "wife of George Charles, 56 Coegnant Road". Buried in Maesteg cemetary, and it looks like possibly the same grave as George.

She was buried on 2nd March 1929, age 65???
