McRae's

Looking for anyone who recognises/connects with this family

Ewen McRae married to Jessie McRae 1 Mar 1860 at Kintail
Their children - Farquhar b.1860, John b.1863, Ann b.1866, Flora b.1869, Alexander b.1872, Peter b.1875, Donald b.1877, Bella b.1881and Helen b.1883.
I know that Farquhar married Isabella Turner, Flora married Robert McRaild, Ann married Ewen McMillian and Bella married Donald McPherson.

The 1871 Census places the family in Garryualach, Glengarry.
By the 1891 Census they are at Lochournhead, Parish of Glenelg and are still there in 1901.

I'm almost positive that Ewen's parents were Farquhar and Catherine McRae/Macrae who in 1841 and 1851 were living on Skye at Camasunary Farm.
Jessie McRae's parents were John and Flora McRae and she was born in 1842 at Glenshiel.

I'd love to hear from anyone who connects to any of them. Thanks for looking.
Elaine

Lorna,

Thank you very much for taking the time to look up the 1881 Census for me :)

I have just discovered today, funnily enough, that if I have the correct Farquhar and Catherine MacRae then Farquhar's mother was Anne MacLennan and his father was Duncan MacRae.
The information came from the book - The History of the Clan MacRae and I can now go back to at least the 1400's with this particular line of MacRae's. The only problem that I have is that there was at least one other couple named Farquhar and Catherine at that time so it gets a bit confusing especially with MacRae's marrying MacRae's!

Best Wishes
Elaine  :)

Since my last post, I've found Ewen's death certificate and his parents were Alexander MacRae and Ann MacLennan not Farquhar and Catherine as I'd thought so it's back to the drawing board  :D

Hi Judmarg,

There are many variations of the name MacRae...my ancestors can usually be found as either MacRaes or McRaes. This site lists variations of the name http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/m/macrae.html

Birth records in Scotland are only available online until 1906...the General Register Office for Scotland holds the statutory records of births from 1855 to present http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/ but they have to be searched in person at New Register House in Edinburgh.

The Clan Macrae in Scotland have a forum where you can post queries and it also gives a rundown of the history of the clan http://www.clan-macrae.org.uk/ it's worth a look  :)
