I have five possibilities for deaths of my gg granddad any pointers of which route i could take now before ordering five death certificates.
I know my gg grandads wife's name and which part of the city he lived in.
Any info will be gratefully accepted.

Depends a bit when and where the death may have taken place - do you know the ages of the people who died, for example.  If not, three or so of them will probably be infants, which will rule them out straightaway and the local register office will probably tell you that.  It may also be worth checking for a death notice in the newspaper or a burial or a will - difficult to advise without knowing a few more details.

The death may not have been registered by his widow, it could have been registered by a grown up son or daughter or even an in-law.  If he died in an institution - hospital, workhouse, prison, asylum etc - it would have been registered by an official of the institution.

Hi i have whittled it down to three. I know he was born in 1850 and I'm quite sure he died in the areas where my three suspects died. one was aged 70 died in 1920. The second was 73 and died in 1923. Third 85 and died 1936.
I know his second Wife's name [ first Wife deceased] but as you say it's not necessary her who would have reported the death.
Thanks for your imput.

ps. I'm also quite certain he died after 1911

Hi Dennis

I would try contacting the register ofice and ask if they have a reference checking service and explain your dilemma.

Not all register offices are able to help, I've noticed that if you have to go through a call centre, they are often unwilling or unable to put you through to the registrars.

If you can't get through, write a letter and enclose a cheque for £9.00 and a stamped addressed envelope, explain you found three entries, gve the dates but not the GRO references which don't mean anything outside of the GRO,  and say you don't know which one is yours. If none of the entries match, you'll get your money back.

Hi

You could look at the National Probate Calendar to see if any of your possibilities left a will. This might cut the numberr of possibilities down.

Hi

You could try looking in the local papers for a obit or if you know the address look in the Burgess roll or look for the burial.
