Ancestry or any other one
« on: Monday 17 October 11 13:22 BST (UK) »
To cut a long story short.
I have been researching my ancestors for a number of years but due to work and family life i have not researched for a number of years now roughly 5 or 6 so my tree is all over the place. Who, where, when etc etc. So i was thinking of getting back on track and was wandering to sign up to one of these genealogy sites were you pay a subscription to view their records.
Now i can go back to around 1850 on my Fathers side and then i suspect my ancestors came from Ireland so would need access to Irish records not sure weather it was southern or Northern Ireland.
I can go back to my Mothers side to around 1820s [i think. As i said it is all over the place at the moment] so i would need access to baptisms if there are such records available on line.
So i was wandering which would be the best site to sign up to for around 6 months Ancestry and Genes re united are allways pestering me or are there any other ones that would be more suitable for my researching.
Sorry if i have posted on the wrong place.

Ancestry dont have many Irish records.. they recently added the BMD Index which, only covers civil record (i.e. after 1864), and collections of RC parish records (baptisms, marriages etc..) - but these cover only certain parishes in a few counties.

To search for records before the start of civil registration you need to know the denomination of your family, and where in Ireland they lived, so you can check what church records, if any, are available.

Many parish records are available on a free website at www.irishgenealogy.ie, but this only covers a couple of counties (Dublin city, Co. Kerry, part of Co.Cork, and CofI records for Co. Carlow). Records for other counties are available of several pay-websites, but you would need to at least a rough location to check which, if any, suits your search.

Thanks for the infor Shanew147. I'm led to believe they came from somewhere called Bright in Ireland. That was when i fell off the genealogy horse. So have to dig them out. I did remember trying to find this town/ city but to no avail.
Thanks again for the links

There's a townland called Bright in County Down (Downpatrick Poor Law Union)- only 1 in Ireland so this might be the place you are looking for.

If your ancestors did come from County Down then there are a few sites that have records such as Emerald Ancestors or Ancestry Ireland-
http://www.emeraldancestors.com/
http://www.ancestryireland.com/database.php?filename=db_QUIS_advanced2

Before looking at pay sites don't forget to check free databases such as www.familysearch.org and other resources listed under Ireland Resources and Co. Down ones at the top of the DOWN board.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for that Aghadowey. I'm not familiar with Ireland but from what i recall i think it was on the East coast of Ireland and they ended up in Birkenhead which is almost horizontal so to speak from Bright.
I did try looking for Bright a couple of weeks ago but could not find it but around 5 years ago i do recall it was on the east coast not sure if it was southern or northern Ireland.

Thanks for the links too.Much appreciated
