Hi All

My great grandad George Benjamin Baldwin, born 20 June 1875' Lambeth. Died on board the Queen Mary during the Battle of Jutland.

Many thanks for both of those links.  I think a day out for my mum and me to Chatham may be in order.

My great grandfather was listed as Ld. Sea. I'm guessing the Sea is short for seaman but do you know what the Ld. stands for. Also will that tell me what his job was.

Leading Seaman...similar in rank to Lance Corporal with Seaman been Private.
His record should give more info..Looks like he had served a while and was in the Royal Fleet Reserve on outbreak of war.

I have his service record and it states 19 June 1905 he was RFR and in final column C S expired (I think). But he re-enrolled from 23.4.10 to 12.7.15, so how come he was aboard the Queen Mary in 1916.
Also I have found records of him listed as a patient in a hospital in Castletown, Portland, his occupation being Seaman RM.  Do you know if this was a navy hospital.

Does the record state any service on the Queen Mary or have the entry DD 1916 anywhere?
The CS is Continuous Service

If theres no mention of his death on record then there may be another record out there.

WW1 was not the first time that he had seen action. In 1899 he took part in the 2nd Boer War, serving on board HMS Tartar, and with the Naval Brigade ashore. He must have seen some hard fighting with the Naval Brigade, because he was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal with clasps for Orange Free State, Transvaal, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith and Laing's Nek.

George was mentioned in despatches, scroll down to the bottom of the page:

While with the Naval Brigade he allotted some of his pay to his mother, Mrs Eliza Baldwin, 17 Rosedale Cottages, Richmond, Surrey.

The Queen Mary would have been HMS Queen Mary, a battle cruiser. During the battle, in what was known as the run south, admiral Beaty's column pursuing admiral Hipper, she was hit and at 1625 blew up. There were only 9 survivors.
