John Dunkin Historical Society 1935 - Dartford?
« on: Friday 14 October 11 19:46 BST (UK) »
I found this photo among my father's things when sorting his effects after his death.  He was 15 when it was taken and I'm sure he is not in the photo.  John Dunkin was a historian (among other things) from Bicester who moved to Dartford in 1837 and set up a printing business.  Does anyone know anything about the society or recognise anyone?  A very long shot! :)

The John Dunkin HIstorical Society is or was among the flora of societies and clubs at Dartford Grammar School. It was still flourishing when I went to school there in the 1960s. I believe Mick Jagger was chair of the society for a while around 1960. I never belonged to it, but I understand they were a very intellectual bunch.

Thank you!  That means my father must be in it somewhere.  He predated Mick Jagger by a few years but he was at Dartford Grammar between 1931 and 1938.  Intellectual fits too  ;D  He was quite scary.

I wish I could connect John Dunkin with my family. My lot derive from Woodham Mortimer, Maldon, Essex; no connection with Bicester of Dartford. :-(

That wasn't much help was it? But FWIW you can check them out here.

Chris - I am researching John Dunkin and am thrilled to learn about the Society named after him. I am hoping to publish a small book about him to raise funds for my church (St Edburg's Bicester where Dunkin was baptised). I wonder if you would allow me to use this wonderful photo of members of the John Dunkin Historical Society?

Yes of course you may use it :)  I'd be delighted.  Let me know if you'd like a higher quality photo and it can be organised.

Oh thank you so much, Chris. I am very keen to include a chapter on Dunkin's legacy and this would have been a very important part of keeping his name alive.
A higher resolution copy would be brilliant, if you can send me that. I am new to this - are you able to obtain my email address from here?
