Alfred Quelch iromongers assistant COMPLETED
« on: Friday 14 October 11 07:52 BST (UK) »
Hi I am after any info on the above, born around 1853. Father was James quelch (DOB 30/03/1828) who was a tanner married to Mary Ann born 1830 and died 1858. I think there son Alfred had a middle name "James" and he emigrated to New Zealand sometime in the late 1860's early 70's (could be wrong though).

Thanks

Thanks I was beginning to think the same.

Not sure I am related to an Alfred James Quelch who was for a time an Ironmonger in Timaru NZ. He was married in 1876 in Dunedin NZ but was not born in NZ. He also does not appear in any passenger list so it is a stab in the dark. Hopefully I'll get back to NZ next year so I can look into his probate.

Hello
Alfred James Quelch is my great grandfather.  My mother Gwen Quelch was the youngest daughter of John Hector Quelch - who was one of 5 sons and 2 daughters of Alfred James and Ellen Josephine (nee Fleming) Quelch.  I have very little on Alfred's origins apart from being born circa 1851, Oxfordshire, worked as an ironmonger and immigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand in 1870.
He married Ellen Josephine Fleming, of Co. Limerick, Ireland (b. circa 1854 Ireland) in Dunedin 19 April 1876.  Alfred died 21 April 1943 Dunedin and is buried with his wife at Anderson Bay Cemetery Dunedin.
He ran an ironmonger business in Timaru and also operated in Dunedin.  Their home was at 2 Victoria Street, Mosgiel just south of Dunedin and still stands today - a beautiful two storey wooden homestead.
I have quite a considerable amount of information about the Quelch and the Fleming families of their time here in New Zealand.  I would be very interested in knowing about the Quelch family prior to immigrating.  I think some of his siblings ended up in Australia, but can not verify this.
Regards
