Henry Walter Taylor - Gypsy
« on: Thursday 13 October 11 15:04 BST (UK) »
I have a brick wall that I would like to crack - so this is a bit of a longshot as I am aware that Taylor is a surname of travelling people.  Any help would be appreciated :)

Henry Walter Taylor b 1837 (app) in Hastings, Sussex, according to census returns.

In 1870 he marries Elizabeth Lewis in Monmouthshire.  The marriage certificate has him aged 30, a bachelor, a labourer and his father as Robert Taylor, labourer, deceased.
1871 census, he is Walter Flay(g)er, a labourer in the ironworks, with wife Elizabeth and (step) daughter Elizabeth in Monmouthshire.
1881 census, he is Walter Taylor and has a daughter LETITIA and a son MESHACK (as well as Walter and Laura & Frederick)- he is a labourer
1891 census he is in Glamorgan and transcribed as Wlater - additional child AGNES
1901 census he is in Glamorgan as Henry W

I would really like to be able to find him with parents or siblings in the early years - any ideas?

Thanks Rob - I will do a search on this topic.

I have found a Urana (Louisa/Lovina) Taylor b 1827 Heathfield, Sussex, who marries a George Ralph/Relph in 1846.

I am wondering if there is a link to my Henry Taylor but cannot make a definite connection without knowing the parents of Henry Walter Taylor and Urana Taylor.

In the 1861 census there is a Henry Taylor of the right age living with a son of Urana Taylor and George Ralph

Household Members: Name Age
Mary Taylor 70
Henry Taylor 25
John Ralph 10

This family are in Waldron, Sussex.  From this census I can deduce that Mary is Henry's mother and John Ralph's grandmother and therefore this Henry is a brother to Urana BUT is he my Henry?

Sorry I know this is getting a bit confusing :(

Thanks again to Rob - not had much luck with finding any connections to fun fair/showmen - anyone else got any ideas?  I found it much easier finding my Bower family on the canals than this one :(
