I am the 4X grandson of the Rev John Hornblow and Elizabeth Young. His daughter Sarah first married George Moore in 1810. They had 3 children.  In 1816 she married my 3x grandfather John Henry Cadle at St. Paul's Deptford, 29.1.1816. Iin 1820 they joined Howard's group on the ship "Ocean" and with 4000 other 1820 settlers headed for South Africa. They settled in Grahamstown - the settlement was a disaster, planned in England by daft people with no idea of the nature of the land. The settlers were also expected to be unofficial soldiers in the ongoing war against the local Xhosas. Sarah has 6 children, her husband drowned 11th October 1823. Sarah had to seek government assistance. Their story is included in the book abouth the Howard Party called "Through the chequered path" by Pamela Barnes, pub 1988. In 1824 Sarah married James Thomas but after another two children (one blind) he died in 1827. Nothing daunted Sarah married again in 1828 to Charles Guerney in Port Elizabeth. He lasted. She died on 3.11.1843. What a tough lady!

Does anyone know who the parents or other relatives of John Henry Cadle? He was said to be born about 1795 and working as a Tallow chandler. They lived in High Wycombe where three of their children were born ( Elizabeth b 10.2.1817; William b 9.8.1818 and John Henry b 14 10 1819 - all were baptised by the Rev J Bradley at High Wycombe)

Is anything known of the parents of John Hornbow or Elizabeth Young. I was recently sent a copy of a portrait of  the Rev Hornblow which is at the Braintree Church.

Thanks
Wiblin Fuller Wells Cadle Colson

Ive just asked the local Library in Exeter to get me the book by Pamela Barnes, from the British Library.
So far no one has established where John Cadle hailed from, have you looked at my website Sarah Hornblows Children?
http://www.geocities.com/sarahs_children

Im writing a fictionlised version of Sarah's life using the bare bones I have, and something that did cross my mind recently ,  it was this.

Howards Party was from Buckinghamshire, John Cadle lived in High Wycombe . I wonder if Howard who as a school master 20 years his senior, might have taught John Cadle.  I did leave a query on the Bucks county message board but nothing has come back yet.
There is a Cadle/ Caudle group in Long Crendon near Thame in Buckinghamshire.

John Hornblow was almost certainly not born in Halstead essex, No sign of him in Essex Halstead records. Ive had quite a bit from the Braintree Church about him. He was probably from London but there were several Hornblow families in London area.

a quote' In the early part of life  he was placed in the metropolis to a calling which he occupied to general satisfaction. In this former part of his life he adhered to the principals of the established Church, being brought up in that persuasion. He then became a follower of the Rev Mr G Whitefield '
these were Particular Baptists and he later became a member of Abraham Booths congregation at Goodman's Fields in London and that gentleman attended his ordination in Braintree in 1779.
We have not yet found a will for him.

Elizabeth Young was probably also from London. Hornblow wife's maiden name may not have been Young however there is one IGI marriage which fits the dates and thats to an Elizabeth Young. We do know she was Elizabeth. Its hard to prove one way or the other.

If you go to the index page of my Sarahs Children site at the foot of the page is an owl. click on it and you will find Family faces, see what you think there is a definite family likeness . the ones on the left are my family ,Sarah's  (Moore) descendants. The ones on the right are Sarah 's (Cadle ) descendants There is one face on the right on its own and that  is a Mrs Cadle from Long Crendon,a Lace worker, who I included to see if the features fitted and I think they might well!
a Perhaps you want to add some photos of your own??

Theres a chap in US Tom Cadle Palmer who has been researching Cadles. Have you made contact? He is pretty busy at the moment so be patient for a reply.  His email is on the website as is another Cadle decendant  in  Aussi.

best wishes
Annie
