Chalmers - Fyvie
« on: Tuesday 11 October 11 17:00 BST (UK) »
If anyone has the time or inclination could they have a look for my strayed Chalmers offspring. According to 1841 Freecen Robert Chalmers (55), Margaret (50), James (20), Mary (15), Robert (10) William (5) and Margaret (6mth) are ay Mill of Gight with Robert being a farmer. Interestingly in 1851 there is an Alexander Chalmers farming at Mill of Gight but no Robert and no sign of his wife Margaret (they both are possibly dead) The children are also elusive. I presume Robert was a tenant farmer was there no right of succession for children? There are a few James Chalmers is in the area one at Methlick and one at Fyvie which are possibilities. Mary probably would have married. There is no sign of Robert or young Margaret nor William who I am particularly interested in. I know William was in Aberdeen in 1860 when he was married.

I have just checked the monumental inscriptions at Fyvie, Woodhead, Millbrex and Methlick. Your Robert Chalmers senior does not appear on any existing gravestone. Robert would be a tenant farmer (probably of the Earl of Aberdeen). A lease could be granted to a son if the estate was happy with the way a farm was being run. Your best bet is to look at the censuses and statutory death certificates. The valuation roll will give the owner, tenant, occupier and yearly rent. They are available from 1855-56.

Graham.

"I know William was in Aberdeen in 1860 when he was married."

Who did William marry?

There is a Robert Chalmers d 15 May 1848, sharing a burial plot with John Chalmers d 2 Nov 1869 and Margaret Edwards d 3 Aug 1887.

Regards

Malky

William Chalmers married Elizabeth Williams and I know of their whereabouts thereafter just not sure where he is in 1851. I've had a look on Familysearch and the children of Robert and Margaret are listed as Margaret (1810) Alexander (1813) John (1816) James (1820) Robert (1826) and Elizabeth (1843) Elizabeth I am guessing is wrong and there is obviously some missing. I had presumed the Margaret on the 1841 census was a daughter but it doesn't actually say that so she may well be Alexander's daughter who may have been at Ardlethen in 1841. Robert Chalmers was married to Margaret Edwards. Still can't see where she is in 1851 though. Where is it they are burried?

Thanks for the help.

They are buried in New Deer Cemetery stone number 422.
Margaret Edward's parents were Alexander Edward and Janet Sutherland

This link will show you an online index to kirkyards that A.N.E.S.F.H.S. has transcribed.
http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/databank/miindex/miindex.php
Many have been published.  Redoss is offline. Luckily for you I have a copy of the New Deer booklet & can tell you this inscription:
"Erected by Margaret Edwards in memory of her husband Robert Chalmers farmer in Mill- Town of Gight, Fyvie d.15 May 1848 aged 62. Also John son of Robert Chalmers d. 2 Nov 1869 aged 51. Said Margaret Edwards d.3 Aug 1877 aged 96."
The next door headstone (421);
"1861. Erected by Alexander Chalmers ...of Gight in memory of his wife Eliza May d.31 Aug 18... aged 37." (constructed from pieces on the ground)
Hope this helps you!

I found Margaret Chalmers in 1881 census living at Mill of Gight. She's there in 1871 & I think she's also there in 1861 but wrongly transcribed as Mary Chalmers.(Farmer's widow, retired). On all occassions her birthplace is New Deer. There are a further 7 Chalmers headstones in New Deer kirkyard. There are likely more in the Culsh Cemetery, New Deer, as well. There are currently still Chalmers in the New Deer area.
