Jenkins Family, living in Llanellen, Monmouthshire in 1861
« on: Tuesday 11 October 11 16:35 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace my Great Grandfather Herbert Jenkins B 1820 in Bettws,Newport, died 1890 in Llanellen 1890. He was married to Mary Jones B 1827 Llangattock, Usk died 1917 in Llanellen, and had the following children.
John born 1848
Mary born 1850 died 1851
Ellen born 1851 died 1853
William born 1855 died 1866
James born 1856 died 1863
George born 1858 died 1894
Sarah (my grandmother) born 1860 died possibly 1881 as she does not appear on any records after 1881 census.
Alfred born 1861 died 1881

Sarah had a son (no known father), Thomas Edward born 1879 died 1951 in Newport, he was my grandfather.
The family lived in Llanellen from 1861 until Mary died in 1917.

If anybody has info on any of the family, I would be very happy for that information.

Do you mean you are trying to trace his ancestry as you appear to have all info from when he was married?

The only marriage found was December qtr 1847 Abergavenny 26  2 but there is no Mary Jones on the same page - only Mary Lewis or Mary Prichard

Hi Carole, not sure if Jones was Mary's surname, have been able to see marriage certificate or anything to say who Herbert married, except what was in the census stating Mary?

Hi

Presume you have already seen the 1841 entry for Herbert Jenkins aged 15 living in Monmouth.  The 1851 entry shows his birthyear as 1822 which would make him 19 in 1841

Ages from 16 upwards were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs on the 1841 census so his age would be 15 and his birthyear 1826

In 1841 - he appears to be living with John Jenkins aged 80 who was more likely to be his grandfather than his father

I would recommend buying a copy of the 1847 marriage cert which will (hopefully) give his fathers name and will also clarify Mary's maiden name

Bear this IGI entry in mind for when you get the marriage cert - in 1851 Herbert was living in the Llanarth sub district

Hi Carole the 1841 census states he was working in Llanthewy Rhytherech which is about 4 miles from he was born in Bettws Newydd, I think you have the wrong Herbert as he never lived in Monmouth at any time in his life.
But your are correct any Mary, I have been looking at various website to find marriage of Herbert and it now appears that her name was Pritchard married Dec 1847, and living in Hardwick in 1851, which I know is not far Abergavenny and is about 5 miles from Llanellen.
Thank you for your help with Mary as if you had not pointed out Pritchard I would have never looked .

The 1841 does not state where he was working.  He was a 15yr old male servant living in Llangwm

I cannot understand why you say he never lived in Monmouth in his life yet here is the 1861 for Llanellen Monmouthshire with the children you list above and he was born in Monmouth as were his wife and children??

Herbert Jenkins 33 b Bettws Monmouthshire
Mary 39 b Llangattick
John 12 b Hardwick
William  6 b Llanellen
James  4 ditto
George  3 ditto
Sarah  1 ditto

Dear Carole, if you open the census for 1841 it states that he was working for a Sarah Davies at Church farm at Llanthewy Rhytherch as a farm labourer, which is 3 miles north of where he was born in Bettws Newydd as given in the 1881 census and the 1851 census says Betters, these are in the county of Monmouthshire.
As I said he never lived in Monmouth which is a town, but lived in the county of Monmouthshire, the census had a habit of either naming the county or rarely the actual place of birth.
As I said you have the wrong 1841 census that says 15 yrs living in Llangwm.

Indexed as Hebert - not Herbert and no transcription amendment had been reported.  I have now done so to avoid any future search problems
