Harry John Dayton Buffalo New York
« on: Monday 10 October 11 15:47 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am trying to find out and verify some info on Hary John DAYTON born about 1875 in Buffalo, New York.
I believe but need verification that his parents were John Guernsey/George Dayton born about 1845 and served in the Civil War in the 116th Regiment Infantry Union and a Mary Rosa (surname unknown) but married a Philip BALD in Buffalo after John DAYTON passed away in about 1890? Like I said I'm unsure of some info.

The info I have is Harry John is listed on the 1892 US Census as living in Buffalo with Philip Bald and Mary R Bald and may have enlisted in the US Army in 1898 and again in 1899 after being discharged the first time and the second time it's listed he deserted. Does anyone have access to American Newspapers that could confirm this as it may be listed that he was a deserter? He then arrived in Tasmania, Australia in 1901 (did he leave USA because he deserted?) and was charged with larcency upon arrival with 2 other men. He then married Eleanor Fitzpatrick in Tasmania in 1908 and lived the rest of his life in Australia and I believe he died in QLD in 1957 (it appears he left his family behind in Tassie). I found a newspaper article for Harry and Eleanor's marriage in Tasmania and it lists his parents as the late John G Dayton and Mrs Philip Bald of Buffalo NY.

Harry seems to be a bit of a character and I have become interested in him, despite the fact he is not my family relative but a close friend of mine who has talked me into doing their tree (which wasn't too hard). I hope I have provided enough info.

Cheers.

Charlene

For newspapers, you could try www.fultonhistory.com.  It's free.

The New York State Archives will search war service records for a fee:  http://www.archives.nysed.gov/a/research/res_topics_mi_warsvc.shtml  Perhaps your guy was in during the time of the Spanish-American War.

Possible burial for your John G Dayton:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0fj8/
1845 - 1882, Buffalo
Volunteer Fireman

When trying internet searches for this man, he is mentioned a few times, but so far, nothing helpful for your search.

There is an obituary on the site Shelly recommended, for John G Dayton.  No mention of a wife or child(ren).  ???  It does mention the 116th Regiment.

His wife appears to have been Hannah (according to the 1880 census).  She was age 19.  His son, Harry, was age 2.

I haven't researched it enough, but it appears that John's father could have been Matthew W Dayton.

According to the obit, John G "was...a clever draughtsman".  Wasn't that also the occupation for Harry J?

You may already have this:
1900 Buffalo census
Mary R Bald, born May 1855, mother of one child and this child is still living, she was born in New York, her parents were born in Germany.  She was married 11 years, 26(?) was originally written and scratched out.
Also listed is Philip Bald.

Thanks for all the replies.

I haven't actually seen the 1900 census so that does help. I've only seen the 1898 one.

The reason I'm unsure of John G Dayton is because it is listed that he marries Hannah, so I'm wondering if there's two John G Dayton's, but it seems unlikely. So who is Hannah and who is Mary? There is a John Guernsey Dayton born in 1787 who is John G Dayton's Grandfather and he is married to a Hannah Beardsley but the dates don't add up.

Well, have to keep trying and fix this mess up.
Thanks.
