Trying to find source of record on familysearch.org
« on: Monday 10 October 11 09:53 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have a record on familysearch.org for a death of Master Mariner Walter Joss
age 45, that took place at the British Consulate, Carthagena, Murcia, Spain
on 1st August 1858.
There is an Indexing Batch number and source film number but I am unable to
find on that website any details of the source of that record.
It is under GB Deaths and Burials 1778-1988 under the name Walter Goss or Joss.

Walter Joss was 'living' in South Shields with his family and so far I have been unable to find
a record of a burial for him in that area. I guess he could have been buried at sea, however,
would I still expect a death certificate to have been completed for him in this country and
how would I find out the references required for that ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Angie.

Hi Angie :)

I find it easier to go back to the "old" Familysearch site to look at the Library Catalogue from there.  If you go to the old site and click on "Library" on the top menu, then "Library Catalogue", you can type in the Batch or Film/Fiche number and find the catalogue entry.  In this case, film 1864424 has the following info:

Consulate registers of births, deaths, marriages; and lex loci marriages, 1847-1911
Consulate (Cartagena, Spain) (Main Author)
Notes: Microfilm copy of original records at the Public Record Office in London.  London Public Record Office [now TNA] no: FO 920/3-6.

Hope that helps :)

Cheers
Prue

Hi,

His death is in the GRO Consular Death Indices (1849-1965)

Walter Joss, Consulate:  Carthagena, Spain,   1855-1859,  Volume 2,  Page 687

A copy of the death certificate can be ordered from GRO using the above details;  not sure how much information is shown on these death certificates.

I have a copy of the death certificate for Walter Joss died 1st August 1858, it gives no information other than his age - 45.  No cause of death or name of parents etc, under 'Where and when died' it has Carthagena. It also says he was a Master Mariner lived in Shields and the surgeon's name was
Antonio Moneado. The death was registered on 16th August. The consular officer was Edmund J Turner. All very disappointing.

An article in A History of the Great Lakes about  his grand son Frederick W Green says 'Captain Frederick W. Green (deceased) was born in the State of Minnesota, in 1858. His father was Capt. Charles H. Green, who sailed on salt water twenty-eight years and commanded many vessels. His maternal grandfather, Capt. Walter Joss, was also a seafaring man. He sailed ocean ships, and his sons were all sailors, and his daughters married sailors. Our subject's father was born at Frankfort-on-the-Main, Germany, in 1828, and is now living in retirement at Duluth, Minn. His father* died in Carthagena, Spain, and is buried there. Both served through the Crimean War in the British navy.'

*Frederick's father, Charles H Green (husband of Jane Marr Joss) was still alive when this was written so I think it should say father in law and refers to Walter.

You've already received your answer, but for future reference:
You don't need to go to the old catalog to find batch numbers or film numbers. Both searches are available on familysearch.org. When you found Walter Joss, it gave a batch number and film number. Highlight and copy the film number, then click on the familysearch logo at the top left, then click "catalog" (across the top). In the pull down box for search type, select "film number", then paste in the film number. It then gives you the catalog record for that film (see http://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/show?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fcatalog-search-api%3A8080%2Fwww-catalogapi-webservice%2Fitem%2F674647).

One suggested improvement for familysearch is to make the film number a link to the catalog so you don't have to copy and paste, but that's not there yet.
